Background Verifications: What all do they check from social media sites?

Rule of thumb in social media is it's better to avoid mentioning or associating yourself with your organisation in your profile (Example: Twitter) bio so that you don't come under a controversy once you join. In today's scenario even if you don't mention your org in Twitter and have the same profile name on both LinkedIn and Twitter anyone can track you down for your remarks and tag it on you. We're officially in the witch hunt era. We see people losing jobs and job offers even before they join. If you're someone who is too much into posting polarising content/hate mongering on political and religious topics then it is better to have a pseudonym and ID that is fake (assuming it is too difficult for you to have self control on yourself and cannot stop posting hate). I usually run a background check on social media when I try to hire someone in my team. Indian companies however have a long way to go in implementing strong social media policies on their employees. Indian companies care the least despite the increased polarisation.

So are you celebrity or something?

Social media profile maters only when the person is representing as the face of the company. Or when some trouble happens. If social profile of a person is a decision factor, then many even mid level managers accused of harassment /scam should be jobless. But to be safe, one should not make explicit comments. Just like when you see a street dog , one takes caution, right? The dog might not attack but why risk?

There is no right or wrong answer, depends on the person reviewing your accounts and which ‘wing’ they belong to. But yeah generally stay away from controversies, so if any post has seen a lot of negative trolling etc then delete those
