Don't. Forget about air pollution, they do cause a lot of sound pollution. I've seen a neighbouring grandpa die because of the sound of fireworks. Almost every one older than 55 years in age today feel sudden shocks with these sounds and it can cause cardiac arrest too.
Even if you want to take historical and cultural aspect, the name Diwali came from Diwa (lamp in Sanskritam) and Aavali (linear arrangement). It is a festival of lights, not a festival of smoke and sound pollution.
