What is the actual job of consultant, for example if I am software developer then my job description will be developing application using some programming language but what consultant do what is their role what is the work they do, also who gets more salary, consultant or software engineer

Well, we solve problems that our clients can't, even when they have more resources and headcount. It's mostly because we excel in a specific domain or can better pretend that we do.
Speaking about money, yes, in the short run, a software engineer makes more. However, in the long run, you won't see someone coding in their late 40s or 50s, but you will see consultants with a high package.
Could you share an example? Take an example domain, so what would be a typical client problem?
