Career advice

Hi All,

I have 8.5 years of experience. iit + iim (recent 1 year mba ). initially I worked at analytics KPOs , then I worked on my own startup. post that I worked with a b2c startup as a program manager . Worked in growth, analytics , cross functional etc etc

Then post mba , I am again working at a startup managing a team of business analysts.

I feel like my career is not really going anywhere. I have become a "generalist" suitable for early stage startups but I do not want to work at startups any more.

what do I do ? How do I move into bigger companies for better stability OR find a stable suitable startup where I can become a VP (but then a VP of what ? )

A lot depends on what you want to do and what you can do.

IMHO generalist roles won't help you in career growth beyond mid-senior roles. You will need to figure out your expertise and start shifting to a role in that domain.

Additionally, there is a dependency on your current CTC. If you are over paid currently, you will struggle to do the above. And the solution lies in going for a low/no hike but in a domain you would want to specialise in.

PS: I think I know you. Do you work in a Unicorn startup in PropTech by any chance?

You will need to figure out your expertise and start shifting to a role in that domain - please elaborate on this. Maybe I can move into growth. If yes , then how ?

PS - not proptech but close. Probably you know me cause of my user id , which used to be my counter strike alias

You will need to shift to B2C or B2B Sales or Business Development or Growth.

  1. Growth essentially means building companies and channels from scratch. There are offline and online growth roles Online Growth is basically Growth Marketing and has a high entry barrier to join at your experience and stage. Offline Growth as a role is usually present only in big companies as offline scale-up is handled by Business Heads usually. Your plan should be: Identify Business Heads in your network and check with them if they have a separate division for growth coming or have a requirement for the same. Simultaneously, try for growth led roles in your current organisation.

  2. Sales and Business Development will be easier for you to get in but much harder to excel in. You can do this only by moving to such roles in other companies in the same sector as your current company

PS: Nope. I know you from what you wrote about your current role. I think I know you. Let me guess, doesn't your name start with S and end with U?

As you are exposed to Analytics, Growth, you can go in any such directions.

To my guess, you are looking for structured learning, designation growth. Till the time you make such career move, why don’t you try establishing such practices within your org? It will help you learn about processes by doing.

I'm interested in getting freelance gigs in generalist roles.

What can make or do to add to my proof of work portfolio?

I have tried blog writing on business and management topics, but they aren't getting me anything
