Is data science still worth it in 2024?

I am trying to transition from a business analyst to data scientist. I was wondering would a post graduation in the same be worth the expense and effort? Or having a significant presence in the community ( like kaggle, analytics vidya etc) is enough? If degree is a good to have then please recommend which one. Thanks in advance!

Talking to my nephew nowadays seems like the AI bug has gotten to him. Even going back during the early parts of my own career and even undergrad, ML and stats was still a fledgling field. Most of the smart folks went into SDE roles at top tech. I still remember that even back then, hiring for roles like these were extremely theoretical. You would test even experienced candidates with undergrad topics which was slightly outdated tbh because most of the functions were abstracted away and it is obvious that you would not remember the matrix approach to finding weights for a simple linear regression model. Has this changed now? Because I don't think interviews like that actually evaluate the accumulated wisdom that experienced professionals bring to the table. I mean it is generally a waste of time for anyone to brush up manual derivations or remember SQL niche intricacies. Usually it is better to test for the 80% knowledge that is actually useful on a day to day basis. I mean if the main things that companies test in experienced candidates is something that can be rote-memorized from a book then they are not testing the right things no? What do you all think? Just wondering about this for some time now especially considering the hype around AI?

Hi all. I'm currently an analyst (no exposure to DS). Is it worth doing an MS in Data Science? I do realise that upskilling without a degree is possible, but I also see a some MNCs prefer to have post grad candidates. Would be very helpful if you could share your experiences/ opinions.

I’ve total 4 years of experience in data engineering. I wanted to have on-site opportunities but in this market it’s not looking easy. ( Recently switched) So I’m thinking to utilise this time by pursuing masters from canada / aus. Do you guys think it’s safe to let go of the job and pursue msc?

I'm kinda worried about AI as it can do greater analysis and generate insights in a lesser time when compared to humans. Will data analytics become useless in the future? I spoke to an experienced guy in the IT sector who has worked in many FinTech firms and consulting companies. He said when the data science hype started several years back, companies started getting funds from venture capitalists to set up data science wings . Companies went on a hiring spree with this money to hire data science professionals. However, as the years passed, these data science departments failed to generate revenue as expected. Also, some aspects of data science will very likely be automated.
