Don't take your career too seriously

Don’t take yourself (or your career) too seriously. Plenty of brilliant people started out in jobs they hated, or took paths that weren’t right at the beginning of their careers. Professional development is no longer linear, and trust that with hard work and a dedication to figuring out what you want to do with your life, you, too, will be OK!—Kathryn Minshew, CEO of The Muse

This kind of advice works only for the western countries. Not for India. A single gap year in your resume, without good contacts the odds of landing a job is very difficult. If the economy at that time is slightly down the difficulty quadruples. Unless you prove them you were close to launching a rocket to mars, those stupid rangoli idiots will not even talk to you. I dont blame them, we have 1000 people for each job opening.

My Coworker is an american, he did his MBA from a mid level college in US. Nothing fancy. Like any middle class American he and his wife went travelling around the world. He worked in Germany for 6 years teaching English. When he returned back to states, He was on food stamps for 6 months and then he joined the company as Financial analyst, grew to become manager in 10 years.

If any of us was a school teacher for 2 years, IT companies will not even shortlist our resume. Dont follow the west on any advice. It wont work for us.
