Why are welfare schemes branded as freebies?
On average, every Indian pays 24% of their income in indirect taxes. They in no way contribute less to a country's development than corporate folks. However, when a government announces a welfare scheme for the marginalized, everyone starts shouting "freebie. The Indian middle class is often caught between two worlds, and they can feel insecure and resentful of both the wealthy and the marginalized. If India had set up an unemployment benefit (for certain period after job loss) such as the one in developed western countries, will it be considered a freebie? Especially during the current market scenario?

Free Electricity - Only farmers get free electricity others get subsidies. If free electricity for farmers is cut, then annual food cultivation decreases and food prices skyrockets.
There are still families that earn less than 10K per month. They cannot afford to pay 500+ per month. Just because they are poor doesn't mean they have to sacrifice human necessity ( yes, electricity is a human necessity)

Current Unemployment Rate : Unofficially 7.45% as govt is refusing to release it
7.45% of 1.4 billion is slightly over 100 million btw. Which is an insane number in absolute terms but sounds small as a percentage

IMO Most of the time, govt(politicians) announces freebies/subsidies for votes, not for welfare.
Quality subsidized education, food , health etc are important compared to free tv, mobiles.
Most of the backlash is against such freebies which makes either people lazy or introduced for wooing voters.
Make them farmers and all the other freeloaders pay taxes. Not all of them are poor. Some are just exploiting the system.
Stop giving free bikes and cycles to kids in poor states. I know workers work the whole year in the city but go back to give exams where they just pass by cheating to get a free cycle from the government. This shit is helping no one except our corrupt politicians maintain their vote banks.

2. Do not give them actual good services like roads and safety
3. meanwhile spend money on new parliament building//statues and whatever dick-measuring contest u fancy

During the Karnataka election, there were literal booths set up by both parties around 500m away from the polling area. They were literally handing out money to people and asking them to vote for their candidates. I live in a posche colony and still, people were receiving bribes in public.
We the people are also to blame for electing such clowns
