About government job benefits

My parents are asking me to prepare for government exams and get enrolled in SSC coaching. I want to know what are the perks and benefits of government jobs that make people want it so badly. My parents both work for a private company, and I do not find anything wrong with working for a private firm. I like their lifestyle but they keep pushing me to go for government jobs only. What is so good about government jobs in India?

I had prepared for SSC CGL in my early job years, worked really hard, scored a decent 146 in tier1(2017 I think), tier2 was apparently easier for me because of Maths and English. But thankfully I realised it is not worth it and I come from a poor family. I did not prepare/give the tier2 exam. I started looking for a job switch, switched with good hikes, again changed jobs several times in my 9 years of career till now, built home at my hometown, making decent money in my job now. If I had joined SSC that time, I wouldn't be able to build home for sure, the salary is too low compared to IT. Analyse your career options, if you are good and can work well in future then stick to private sector. If you want secure life then go with govt sector. And if you want to go in govt sector then why not upsc? SSC post are not that top level, you will be reporting to upsc guys.. Also, i hate reservations, can't imagine reporting to someone who is less deserving and has a low IQ/intelligence than me.

I dont know what exactly is good in government jobs other than the job security. But I have seen many smart kids around me wasting their youth on these entrance exams. They are left ineligible for these exams and useless for the private sector eventually. Trust yourself and dont get into that sh!t

Grass is Green on the other side

Maybe your parents are looking at things from job security point. I have a friend who was hell bent for a govt job from Day1 of college because his father suffered job layoffs multiple times. This was biggest trauma of their house.

There are various reasons why people consider applying for government jobs:

  • Job Security: The instances of layoffs are very rare with government jobs. You can do your work properly and much better if you’re not under the constant pressure of termination. There’s a certain sense of stability that comes along with government jobs.

  • Regular Income: The salary you’re earning from government jobs is pretty steady and predictable. Generally, there are no issues of delayed salaries, unless it’s an emergency situation.

  • More holidays: Government employees tend to have more holidays than private company employees. These holidays depend on the various states and the listed holidays that the Central Government has. Furthermore, they also have sick leaves and annual leaves.

  • Social Prestige: The hype of government employees remains a constant in the present day. They are more admired and respected than other employees, probably because government jobs are difficult to crack. And once you do it, you’re secured with a decent job role and salary package.
