If you tap on the parent comment, all the comments below it collapse, and you will easily be able to see the next parent comment.
If i take an example, your comment on this post is the parent comment and mine is under yours. So, if anyone were to tap on your comment, it would collapse all the comments under your post.
I like the idea because I like reading different comments.

I prefer single file replies over Reddit's deeply nested replies. Simple to go through.
