Here's the truth, no one will give you the best card if you're just starting off. The optimal card depends on your spending level. But a general rule of thumb is that if you're able to get average 5 percent value back, you're doing good. For basic spend you might want a cashback card like SBI Cashback (5 percent statement credit on online spends) or Axis Ace. As you move up, target AMEX Plat Travel. With 4lpa spend you can get benefits worth 30k. If you hold that card, they'll often offer you MRCC for free, which can be used to earn 12k points by spending 72k per year. HDFC Infinia and DCB are great all purpose cards with base reward rate of 3.3 percent, easy redemption at 1:1 ratio, and multiple ways to accelerate your rewards.

Do they really give MRCC free with Plat Travel? How do we get it?

They call it a companion card. The way it's issued is murky. I got it as a targeted offer. Others I know have called their service center and have received it. I've seen some people claim they were provided the option when applying for a new card. Google it - communities like Techfino typically track and share when these are being issued.

Fuel, handsdown SBI BPCL Octane. My joint family has fuel expense of 15,000 a month and I have got 29,000 (1 point = 0.25) points since January when I got the card.
BPCL has redemption support in all the outlets after they all switched to Pine labs POS
