Healthcare in US?

Hello there,

I have leukemia, and I am considering studying and working in the US. However, I have been discouraged by the healthcare system there. I genuinely want to know if pursuing a Master's degree in the US would be the right choice for me.

As far as I know, students and employees typically have insurance. Would it fully cover the treatment costs? Is there anything else I need to consider?

If anyone can provide some insights, I would greatly appreciate it.

This is a very complex issue. You need to speak to a couple insurance providers if possible. Insurance usually covers costs only upto a certain amount. Let’s say $800 a year. But beyond that you have to pay out of pocket.

An example:
My friend had $12000 of expenses in a year

Insurance paid the first $2000 easy. The next $10000 was covered 70% by insurance and rest 30% by him.

Now this can overall be a very high cost. $3000 out of pocket.

So compared this to what costs you might actually get in a year by speaking to an insurance provider or the student department at the university you are about to join

Thanks a lot for the info.

In my case, it looks like the medication I am currently taking costs around 10K per month - https://www.drugs.com/price-guide/gleevec

However, generic alternatives, such as from Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drug, appear to be significantly more affordable.

It is just pure complex. If insurance is unable to cover you or reject your claims, consider yourself bankrupt. I can assure you even the co pay will be expensive for a student if the insurance covers youm

Best to pay a consultant on the same to acquire knowledge.

Thanks for the insights. Yes, it does seem quite complicated. It looks like exploring countries with free healthcare seems to be the best option for me.
