How to answer- where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I have given many interviews in my life, but the one thing common in every interview is asking where do you see yourself in 5 years. And I have no idea how to answer this question. I have experienced this multiple times when the interviewer asked me this question, and I did not have a proper answer. So please tell me a few good and appropriate answers to this question. I know I should be honest in the interview but I don’t know how I should respond to this question when I, myself, don't know the actual answer. What would be the ideal answer to this question?

“Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?” is a common job interview question. While for people who have already started a career answering this question may seem easy, but it is a challenging task for freshers. HRs generally ask this question to understand a candidate’s long-term aspirations and ambitions and how compatible their goals are with the business’s objectives. While answering this common job interview question, you need to keep in mind the following things:

  • Decide on your professional aspirations: Take your time and decide which path you want which would match your interests, areas and abilities. Also, see if your areas of interest and what the company is offering is compatible or not.

  • Learn about the organisation: When the HR of the company asks this question, he/she is looking for whether your goals are matching with the culture, principles and long-term objectives of the organisation. So, you must do thorough research and customise your answers so that they are convinced to take you in their company.

  • Show your dedication: The HR of the company you’re willing to work for would want to see how interested you are in joining their team. Hence, you must show them your willingness to advance your skills, learn new things and take up new tasks.
