How to grow your career amidst politics?
A few of my peers in my team talk tech jargons throughout the day in the workplace and do no work at all. They are the ones that are eventually promoted and I feel left out despite doing so much smart work and hard work both.
Teach me some ways to defeat these imposters and grow in my career.
Time to change the job. Keep moving. Don't bother 'defeating' imposters. Treat them as blessings, they'll dig their own grave
Practically speaking, you’ll find such people everywhere. So rather than running away from this problem I would prefer to fight and solve the problem.
Agreed with your point.
My perspective to this problem - i would focus on my growth, switch company time to time, collect fat paycheks and mind my own business. Become a manager in few years and would create a team of doers and not imposters. I'll try to solve it using top down approach not bottom up.
Also i have worked with managers who were formerly doers and it's great to work with them but you have to be lucky to find one.
You will see such people at every company. What usually happens is that they will be able to scale up quickly but won’t be able to prove their worth after a point. Obviously it boils down to the management to notice such pompous people and nip them in the bud, but many a times they fail to do it. Also, such people do wonders in young startups and then drag the company down eventually.
Now coming to what you can do about it - nothing honestly. You have to make sure that you keep talking about your work to your seniors and highlight the impact. Keep your bases covered and your growth story will be one that you truly deserve.
You can’t win with such people and can only wait till their reality shows up as they fail to walk the talk.
Well said!
Every company has such folks. Keep your head down, cultivate a good and positive tribe around you and keep working hard and smart.
