How to identify a good startup to work for?

Having worked for both early stage startups and large corporations, the work satisfaction I get by working for startups is unmatched.

I’m currently identifying few of the startups to work for as an experienced software engineer.

What are the metrics and parameters to look for?

There are some brilliant minds here who share their awesome knowledge, your thoughts will be appreciated!

What I do:

  1. Understand the business, ask enough questions on that in interviews, join only if you fundamentally feel excited
  2. If the above is true, look at Glassdoor. Only look at negative comments, the other ones are plastered. Try making sense of repeated patterns of problems
  3. Most Important - Reach out to ex employees on LinkedIn, most people are nice and helpful. Ask them about their thoughts, reason to quit, opinion on business and culture

It’s an important step, make sure you put in the effort you would on a mini project :)

Thanks for your comment. Apt if it’s a known startup.

What if it’s a very young startup?

On point 1 - Try to see if the model and mission is exciting even at that stage. If there is a chance of good outcome basis the market etc

On point 3 - Try to get connected with current employees, or if possible, anybody who would have worked with the founders in their previous roles in your circles

Or just meet them enough times to know they’re not assholes

Culture is obviously 1 big thing. Look at how all companies conducted their layoffs now.

Good business plan is good to have.

Founders are proven competent people and not some kids with history of backlash

Perhaps the exec teams are good. Look at what's happening in Bharat Pe. Perhaps dig deep on companies you want to join on forums like these.

Thank you for your response.

This makes sense for well known startups. But how would you approach this if it’s an unknown startup and there’s not much details available.

I would stay far from unknown startups without any thing to vet
