Interview w Google

Hi all, I have around 2 years of experience, and I am getting a chance to interview with Google. I am currently working on frontend, but I want to move to backend and I have been preparing for that, but with phone screen round coming up, if I tell them I have worked on Frontend, then I will definitely be considered for frontend role and if I lie there, then I might fuck up interview if they ask backend questions, any suggestions will be appreciated. What should I be doing in this case, Thank you! Please advise!

They expect you to be a generalist, not specialist atleast for most parts. Don’t lie, you might be in trouble later on.

Bro don’t come here. Gojek is not what it used to be. It’s worse now because of top management. Might get merged with Grab, so lot of uncertainty

Companies like google and and ms wont tie you to a specific role. They might pit you anywhere. If you are lucky you will get to build something from scratch. Otherwise you will be polishing some module that is already running so you will get experience on everything

You will anyway get the entry role so - don't lie about your work experience. Let them know, that you're interested in the backend roles even though your experience is of frontend.

Study DSA well, do leetcode as much as you can and you can ace this. 🫰

As others have mentioned, since you have only 2 years of experience, in big tech companies, you'll be hired for a generalist type of role. They'll only have DSA rounds but for your own confidence, you can go through some beginner level system design stuff like https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTCrU9sGyburBw9wNOHebv9SjlE4Elv5a&si=PXFYjH00I7oKpATi to understand key building blocks of any backend system. All the best!

Tell them honestly about your current situation and your aspirations.

Later you can ask to provide an opportunity to switch the role.

Right now focus on DSA and other things for interview preparation.

To prepare, you can sign up to this free newsletter by Sahil Gaba who is a Googler if you want: https://www.interviewmaster.io/subscribe?ref=swx6nm32gR
