Is GLG Consultation a scam?

Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG) had approached me for help with a topic related to my subject matter expertise. They will have their paying client on the other side of the call and I will have to answer their questions without revealing my identity or any trade secrets. They do pay consultation fees (billed at a negotiated rate per hour) for the same.

  1. Firstly, is this a scam?
  2. Secondly, they give independence to us to not answer any question (if it reveals any information that we don't want to reveal). Yet - is it a safe bet? What if my current employer comes to know about the same?

Hey so I use GLG calls very regularly as part of my work

Not a scam at all It’s a safe bet, just ask them to mask any personally identifiable information, and do not reveal anything that only you would know

Most experts end up only revealing metrics that are public, and I don’t necessarily expect to get insider information either. It’s more about learning stuff like - who are the users, how do they decide to buy the product, what GTM tactics ended up working, thoughts on white spaces that you see in the segment etc.

They pay really well for the calls :)

  1. not a scam - very widely used by mbb, pe/Vc
  2. on employee finding out - very low chance, but they theoretically could. This is a risk you’ll have to take
  3. confidential information - you can talk about “industry averages” instead of company data.

Quick point out - have done consultation btw 300 usd to 1000 usd per hour. GLG should pay atleast 500 usd. The smaller ones pay less

They offer pretty well. For a 1 hour consultation, you can ask for northward of USD 200, which is decent. Most of the folks already pointed out things to keep note of during consultation.

Ex MBB - I avoid it now cause I don’t want to risk it coming out. Companies don’t like it if the employees do this. Also in some instances it could be unethical
