Product based Vs Service based companies
People who've worked in both product based and service based companies, what is the difference?
Hi guys I just wanted to ask out of curiosity.
Is tech an essential if you want to make it big in product, especially in India? I understand, people from any background can enter product, but in the long term does being from a tech background play an important role in determining your growth?
I understand people would say 'nah' that's not the case, however the stats point towards something different. (The analysis could be a bit skewed as well since earlier product was purely seen from a tech perspective)
Anyways, let me know what you guys think Thank you
Not essential at all.. obsession to solve the problem is.. like you should know the customer, market, competition inside out..also have a winning plan and strategy.. it's like you have full clarity how to win just need people to execute the plan.. that is imo a successful product person..tech , design, business is all secondary..
Reason - lets say i have a startup in any sector, say kids clothing or a jwellery store chain/manufacturing plant, no VC or indian govt startup initiatives will give me funding if i dont have any digital presence/website/ecomm platform.
Every one needs to have a product on internet and for that, you would need to be technical!
Else you can go for traditional businesses but they wont have a product management in place because a business owner and family itself ll be the product manager
Bias when hiring for new roles leads to this but an internal switch within an org doesn't have this bias
It depends if the product is a tech product or not. And if you don't get to work on any other product, then tech product is one product to get learning

I see candidates with 2-4 years earning in 20LPA+ whereas sales and marketing folks who sit with 4-8LPA tops. Isn't the disparity too much?
