Moving to Chennai

Been born and brought up in Delhi and have lived here for all my 30 years.

I've recently received an offer from PayPal for Chennai location.

A lot is going on in my head considering the relocation like weather, food, infra, etc.

Anyone who can suggest their experiences? The office is in a tech park in Shollingannalur.

Any help with where to live, what to expect, etc will be appreciated.

Paypal office in Chennai is in very nice place. You can stay on the whole OMR stretch. Share autos , buses are continuous.

congrats for job. i also recently moved to chennai for first time.

idk much about shollingannalur but i believe it would be narby omr which is main IT hub in chennai. if you're planning to have your own vehicle then you can also check pg in perungudi area. also, if you want to live nearby north indian concentrated places there's a area sowcarpet where you can get foods from north india and all pg are opearted by them also. i haven't been there yet.

if you have a taste for south indian food then you'll be good. otherwise strictly go for north indian pg they will provide mixup of both dishes. (you can check with other people beforehand in pg if they provide good food or not, sometimes they'll give you genuine response)

weather in chennai is bad. although, till january it'll be good but there'll be chance of heavy rain and floods in every nov and dec.

Besides the usual south Indian food like variety of dosas and idlis etc I haven't had much of south Indian food. But I do love it. Prefer it over North Indian breakfast any day.

The office is apparently in the Elcot SEZ. I'm planning to stay in a gated society/apartment complex.

You would get a good apartment in a gated society easily in OMR. Areas to search - Navalur, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam, Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam . Lots of good communities at a 5 km radius from office. Chennai is a very inclusive city when it comes to food - so you will love it here.

I just moved here, from Bangalore and here are my observations:

Food everywhere except the office is subpar in hygiene as well as taste, especially any other cuisine other than south, so try to use the cafeteria as much as possible.

Weather is usually bad, be it rains and waterlogging or heat and extreme heat.

Sholinganallur is undergoing metro construction so coming by car is a very bad idea unless you wanna be stuck in traffic for hours.

Office is beautiful inside and has ample space, plus latest tech.

Staying in gated community is advisable but the rents are abnormal, 2BHK is usually 40k and that too only for family's. Rental situation is horrible.

There is an auto and taxi mafia where everything is overpriced and usually they ask 50-100 extra for outsiders.

Language is a huge issue in office, almost everyone speaks in Tamil and form groups where you feel left out. So it's hard to survive if you do not know south Indian languages.

These are my observations but I guess you can forgo all of that for the pay(excellent) and the work culture( supposed to be good but I've seen bad reviews as well)
