Ola didn't disrupt , it destroyed

Damn, let me tell you how Ola has messed up the auto rickshaw industry! They came in acting all fancy, promising convenience and fair prices. But what do we get? Overcharging like crazy! Their surge pricing during peak hours is a complete rip-off. They take advantage of our desperation and squeeze every penny out of us. And who suffers the most? The hardworking folks who rely on auto rickshaws every day.

But it doesn't stop there. Ola's profiteering tactics have destroyed the earning potential of auto rickshaw drivers. They used to have control over their fares and make a decent living. Now, Ola dictates the prices and leaves the drivers scraping for scraps. It's just not fair! They've disrupted the whole system, and not in a good way. The drivers are struggling, and we passengers are getting ripped off left and right. Ola, you've turned a once reliable and affordable mode of transportation into a nightmare. Shame on you!

The whole post is about how ola made these auto drivers arrogant. You can ask any person pre COVID that auto were actually based on meter

SparklySushi

Nope Auto drivers have been arrogant for years. I remember in 2014 auto divers asking 200 for 1-2 kms

I don't use Ola anymore because of some bad experiences. But here's my latest experience either via Uber or Rapido:

Let's say I want to travel for 3.5 KM. Both of them will be charging around ₹55 - ₹60. If I try to hail an auto directly, they charge me ₹250 - ₹350 without any shame.

I've experienced the same and always wondered if this behaviour is only towards people from north/non-kannada speaking population or in general.

Exactly. Disagree with this post - they would lose control over the fares only if they're EVEN ACCEPTING the Ola rides in the first place. THEY NEVER ACCEPT. The person who wrote the post is positioning it as if the auto drivers have dependency on Ola/ Uber. They reject rides without a second or hesitation. The passenger is never able to get an auto at the Ola rate, and if anything, the passengers are suffering because of this.

Also nowadays autodrivers don’t user meter any more in Bangalore is it?

MagicalMuffin

I mean why would they. They can easily quote 200 rs for 2 km , every auto same case , political backing and a misplaced language vector some reasons

PeppyPickle

Very true, but how is that no one and I include Karnataka government, central too looking into this unusual spike from a specific city

Blr Auto drivers were arrogant and quotes exorbitant amount even in 2013. Especially during peak hours. Discussion were on what multiple on Meter. Like 2X meter + rs 20 etc. Ola/uber atleast helps in price discovery now

Haha, bruh.. not even close.. I'm just starting out. But I have seen my parents haggling with auto drivers and how willing they are for exploiting when the passenger is desparate in the pre aggregator days. Ola is not the reason for auto over quoting, it is their greed. It always has been.

WigglyWalrus
WigglyWalrus

Man, I'll be honest. Ola is clutch for me in Pune and Bangalore. Auto-drivers over there are literal chuts who will overcharge you by 2x-3x. You would wish that you'd rather walk that distance than ride it with auto. Mumbai? Nah, I'll take the normal auto like everyone else. It is cheaper and auto-drivers don't fleece you. I don't use Ola there.

Banglore used to be like Mumbai Pre OLA time.

Lol rickshaws are a regulated space. You blaming ola for extortion by auto drivers is a weird position to take. Now if you want to argue about cabs, that's a stronger position.

MagicalMuffin
MagicalMuffin
Student22mo

Where are based? Rickshaws are the least regulated space. Find a auto which actually charges the legal meter amount in banglore you will find the truth.

JazzyWaffle
JazzyWaffle

That doesn't matter. There are limited permits that are allotted every year to be able to drive an auto in Bangalore, the price is regulated and there's no surge pricing in autos (afaik).

Rules not being followed is a very different argument. I know the meter isn't followed, but that's an enforcement issue. The customer protections are "in place". You can't be blaming private players here.
