Random doubt: IT folks with full-time jobs, why not start a food stall as a side hustle *without leaving your job*? Just hire someone
But why don’t people do it?
- Trust issues with hiring someone? (What if they steal?)
- No time to manage after office hours?
- Bribe hassles with cops/licenses?
- Worried about ‘What will people say’ if you’re seen doing this? (‘This techie is selling chai now?’)
- Or just easier to chill with your salary?

one of the main reason why companies expect us to work long hours, is the reduce the chance of having a side business. All IT companies, have two sets of HR policies. One for India, were we are not allowed to take any other employment. And another to westerners who other employment is restricted to competitors'. They can do any business or work another jobs as long as it is not with a competitor. No person except Indians have 90 day notice period.
Most managers do not like team members having a after office life. let alone if they even suspect the person having a doable side business, he/she will be tortured to quit. Running a side business and hiding it from co workers is practically impossible.
IN my last company , WFH was a option even before COVID. A coworker of mine, went to AP, his hometown opting for WFH. When my manager realized he has a shrimp business that he was now managing from home. His WFH was cancelled and was called back.
The biggest impediment of starting a business is not any of the reasons listed , but the envy of the reporting manager/company.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated

It's always easier to not start a startup. All of the reasons you stated and more are the reasons people tell themselves to justify not trying in the first place.
Most people will never startup anything in their life because they are low agency and don't like taking risks.

Makes sense. Are you working on anything at present?
