Seeking Advice on Career Path: SDET vs SDE

I currently work as an Associate Quality Analyst with 1.5 years of experience in automation testing with Selenium in Java. While my initial goal has always been to transition into a Software Development role, I’m now faced with a decision.

On one hand, my manager has extensive knowledge in automation and Selenium, and I have the opportunity to learn a lot and gain hands-on experience in live automation projects. This path seems to present a faster route for me to switch companies as an Automation Engineer or SDET, which could offer better prospects more quickly.

On the other hand, I’ve been preparing for an SDE role by learning frontend, and backend technologies, and practicing DSA, but I realize that switching into an SDE role might take longer, especially given the current job market where most companies are asking for 3+ years of experience for such positions.

Additionally, the monotony of my current role and environment is impacting my mental health, and I’m eager for a change that aligns better with my long-term goals and brings a more fulfilling work experience.

I would really appreciate your advice on whether it’s wiser to focus on transitioning into an SDET role now or continue pushing toward an SDE role, given the circumstances.

Please guide me on what to do.

I'd say go for the SDET role now, it's a quicker win and aligns with your current skills. You can always transition to SDE later when the market's more favorable.
