Switching careers

Has anyone here, moved away from Software Development to something else. Maybe in a completely different direction, like became a graphics designer, or Game developer etc. or in a similar direction, like went towards Product Management or something similar.

If yes, then I want to know your experience with the switch, and the steps you took to make it happen.

I got into Software engineering 2-3 years ago (attracted by the salaries) but now I just don’t feel like doing it anymore at all.

I asked a friend who’s a PM, and his take on this was, if i wanted to keep earning how much I currently do (20-30 LPA), and want to go even further than that, then SDE is the only option, PMs do not get paid that much amount, when compared to SDEs in the longer run.

What’s your take on this?

So what interests you more ? Did you figure it out yet . PS ~ I'm in the same boat @RapchikBidu

I dunno about interests. But I do want to build own business in next 3-4 years. And for that I need to know how a product is built.

As a developer, exposure to deciding how a product is built is less, you only get told what to do. So maybe thinking of going towards PM roles, through an IIM or equivalent. That will take care of matching current salary part, and will probably be a step towards my ultimate goal. 🤔

What about you? You want to go in the same direction or do you feel like doing completely different?

Ditto, don't know about interests. Though I like SE but suck at solving fu**ing DSA leetcode lists. The only reason probably to change my domain, maybe MBA or might transition to BUsiness analyst roles or ....idk

It's totally fine to make a transition early in the career especially below 10y experience or 32y age.

In long run, no one knows either sde will make or a new profession will be there due to ai and gpt intro.

So follow ur interest and work there even if it pays 20-30% less...

At the end what matters is how happy u r at the eod...else a prostitute also earns more than sdes.

Period and peace out
