Why are product designers so pretentious?
Mostly so called "Design Leaders" "mentors" are always spewing gyaan in my office, LinkedIn, social media but actually fail to implement those stuff. Every other week we have this call where designers are supposed to talk about a topic and every designer comes with such complex presentations, use big words as if they are saving the world or something. They unnecessarily complicate such simple topics and then go on to call themselves designers 🤡

I could say the same about coders and engineers. All jargon all the time. It's always possible to use easier language to explain stuff to non coders.

At least who kuch tangible produce karte hai which is not easy to make . Designers waale act like they are geniuses like Picasso even when most of their work can be copied thru online templates. Not possible to do the same for code and technical architecture

If it were that easy to copy stuff through online templates, people would be doing that and not hiring designers for it lol

PS: I'm a designer and I said all that as a designer. Come at me CRED fanbois. Also I'm not at Capgemini. Burner account

We have to justify our high salaries buddy 😉
But on a serious note, design is very subjective and every Top Dick and Harry will have a say about things. Product designers are ideally solving for end users but also have to keep stakeholders happy (tech and product leadership). On top of that there is pressure to finish things fast even though scope is not defined. If we are able to convince leadership on designs, we have to convince engineering that the solution is feasible.
Wrt complex topics during office presentation, it’s important to cover topics others are not aware of. Else people will complain “yeh sab hume bhi aata hai (we already know this topic)”.
I can’t speak for every designer, but this is my pov based on past and present t experience.
Cheers.

Designers go through the most amount of imposter syndrome. Since it's a subjective field to many, a layman person can also comment on their work and give their opinions, which is not true for coders and other jobs. So some designers become defensive about it and start creating walls around themselves. But the really good ones are those that can speak simply about a topic in simple terms.

This is the reason why i respect PM's. In our country, ability to talk a lot is the edge between mediocrity and sucess. Results don't matter, ability to paint a mental picture does.
In corporate world of some one asks you what is 1+1, if your answer is 2, you are wrong. You must say why 50+50 is 100, then talk about the benefits of walking , give the recipe for panner masala, then prove why 49+49 is 98 and then show 100-98 is 2 which is exactly as 1+1. You do this you will be in sr. Management in no time.

Product design is easy, any chaiwala, doodhwala, sabjiwala, momoswala, raddiwala can do that. We use fancy jargons so that it looks complicated and portray ourselves as intellectuals.

Totally agree. This is why I hate designers so much. And sometimes I cringe as a designer too. We over complicate simple things just to come across as intelligent and resourceful

I like to comment on why designers are hated this much, I have heard this developers create things which are really valuable and difficult. Which is true but u have to understand that india have pathetic deisgn standards and companies have less design maturity.
So most managers here have not eve worked with a brand like faangs .
I startup I wokrd last was e edtch , the guy was a founder, Ai SaaS Manager and all the jargon credential stuff. and had focused on development than deisgn of the product and finally eve the MVP was a big failure.
With 20 years experience this gandu diding even had the skill to look the product and think it was worth for any users.
I worked on revamping the web apps and successfully launched the MVP with the same delopers ,and same gandu manager.
Git great good feedback from users and advisors.
What saved the product back then was the design.
All this value addition depends on what product ur building .

the good designers aren't on linkedin or twitter

@mautkebaadcashhai yeh tu kisi aur se sunn ke aaya hai 🙂
