Zepto vs Microsoft

Which one is better option to join. Have 8 years of experience

  1. Zepto can be high risk high reward thing considering next couple of years.

  2. Tooooo much grinding will be there in Zepto. Have to burn midnight oil everyday I believe. Will have better WLB in Microsoft.

  3. Money wise zepto is not paying as per the competition. One has to take a bet in long term. Microsoft is better compensation wise.

  4. Learning and growing pov zepto can be great as there are small teams. One will get to take lot of ownership and grow exponentially. These kind of opportunities will never be there in any MNC.

I would say zepto just because of esops. You see the speed at which they are raising money. ESOP itself will more than compensate

Zepto is extremely overvalued. The esops are unlikely to have any upside for a decade at least.

Lol esops there mean shit. I have a little idea of how this business works (see my employer).

Zepto is in no condition to go public or buy back the options anytime soon. Even Blinkit would struggle with the same if it were not acquired by a public company.

Given the way they’re raising money, I won’t be surprised if this will end with the VCs pocketing the profits of their overvalued investment.

Would suggest to stay away from Indian ‘high growth’ startups. Most of the items are at the whims of leadership with unrealistic timelines. Learning wise you will only get breadth as in kubernetes in 2 days, which has been planned by some random VP closing up to the leadership.

MNCs will provide you to take up items and go to the depth of things, which imo would help you stand apart in any given case.

Plus all the grind and hustle only looks good from outside, day in day out, you’ll only be losing your precious years running behind some insatiable pursuit of some one running for next promotion.

Someone had to say this.

100% aligned with this opinion.

You would have to hustle too much in zepto. And I guess ESOP values are also saturated now.

Join if you're true hustler not a wannabe Hustler, else Microsoft is fine, you would have time for yourself.

Saying this after working in early stage and growth stage startup for 3 years

Zepto is in a bubble. Eventually when they figure out profitability, they will have to do mass lay-offs. Consider this before joining.

Microsoft is way better if same salary. Even with a very high salary comparatively if you don't want to squeeze for a quick gain it's not worth it.

You can always move from big tech to startups but doing the other way round is insanely hard fyi.

@spez would you recommend joining blinkit? I don't think they give esops anymore and how's the work life balance for tech teams? (Delhi ncr office)

If you’re getting a good enough increment on the base, not a bad idea to join and then head out somewhere else.

The WLB is bad (like any other high growth startup these days). Leadership puts tight deadlines on the PMs and the PMs will put it on you. People often work weekends here; not to mention the nightly deployment windows.

And while there are good problems to solve, the place is riddled with poor leadership and a lack of uniform standards (promotions, increments are totally dependent on your manager; there’s no common bar that’s enforced, at least as of now).
