I got my first salary after getting my cash CTC increased from 22 to 29LPA I thought I’d be happy but I just checked my bank account and closed it. Felt nothing. No differential feeling / experience for even a second YOE: 5 Earlier when my salary moved from 30k to 50k month I used to get the happiness hit for a week but now it’s “meh” even though the difference is much higher. Anyone else rocking the same boat?

Talking to a lot of senior folks I’ve realised something: If you’re good at what you do, 20s are marked by meteoric growth, salaries increase exponentially as you climb the corporate ladder but it is at the expense of your youth and vitality. By mid 30s, you’ve been robbed of your youth while you were busy chasing the next paycheck and your earnings stay consistent as progression starts to plateau. That’s why a lot of these B2B SaaS founders are mid 30s. There’s now a trend for an entrepreneurial switch at that point in life because it is the only way to sustain the same level of earnings growth as your 20s. A lesson learnt too late, maybe? Because, we all think about financial risk but not much about time risk. Now imagine if only you would spend the early part of your adulthood doing something that is mightily ambitious, foregoing your “career” earnings for some time in exchange for impact and reward, while your youth hasn’t faded away. It doesn’t have to be the case that you become a founder, but perhaps you can join a company which is a melting pot of highly talented folks aligned on the same goal, something that inspires you as well. I think mine was helping metro travelers out with directions, many newbies and even locals find it confusing and need help with stations and where to change metros.

What did you do with your first salary?

To me? "Congratulations! We are giving you a one-time cash bonus of 1L." This was for a deliverable I ideated and executed end to end. Unfortunately, it was recognition too late because I was already planning to resign, which I did in the next week. 😂🤡

I come from a poor background, but somehow I worked extremely hard and now I earn decently well (above 60 LPA cash). My problem is- I don’t mind spending on others. In fact I don’t even think twice before taking my card out and buying things for family or friends. I have also lent money to multiple people when they are in need of help (total close to about 2-3 lakhs). But it doesn’t bother me even a bit. I don’t even care about whether I’ll get it back or not. But, when it comes to me, I find myself struggling so much and questioning my decision to buy things even as cheap as INR 200-300. And most of the times I find myself going extra miles to save a few bucks. In fact, I also recently downgraded from a bigger to smaller apartment, because I have been doing so much maths around saving 7-8K a month. Maybe there is some part of me that feels that I don’t deserve any of this. Anyone has any idea how to fix this?

Mine was 8800 rupees cash from working as an assistant at the Chemistry Lab at my Uni for 4 months. Gave the entire thing to Mom. Still remember her proud and happy reaction like it was yesterday :)
