Where have all the 100 ‘smart’ cities gone?

The Smart Cities euphoria has waned. It is absent from election promises and in the bragging of ministers. The project was supposed to be completed by June 2021. 100 cities were selected for the project. Turns out to be one more jumla among many!

There was recently a news article, where the budget alloted for smart cities was in thousands of crores, but utilized was so so less that it wasn't even worth mentioning

Golden period since 2014

Three people died and six were injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 fell on cars, including taxis, Delhi Fire Services officials said. These were pre-monsoon rains only, as monsoon is yet to arrive in the city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on March 10, 2024. The roof of the Dumna Airport in Jabalpur, which was renovated at a cost of around Rs 450 crore and inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on 10 March 2024, could not last the first rain. Crores were spent to build Ayodhya as a high-tech city. But after the first rain, newly-built areas are submerged in water. There have been many more examples since we gained independence in 2014.
