How many of you truly believe in what you do at work?

When I was job hunting a few months back, I told the head hunter that a couple of companies she proposed was not something I believed in, in the nicest way possible. Maybe a dick move, idk. She told me it’ll be impossible for me to find a job in this market if this was my attitude. After that, a month later, she ghosted me when I asked her if she has any leads. I spoke to a few friends and they said it’s a good thing to want to truly believe in what the company does and few told me it didn’t matter. To me it does, because I have always worked in very early startups and I see my time also as an investment. And not to mention, early stage startups are tedious to work in. You lose your motivation if you don’t feel like you’re contributing to a great extent in multiple areas. What’s your take on it? Is it alright as long as you get the money in your account?

I’ve been with the current company for a little less than 2 years. Work was challenging and interesting. But over the last few months it’s getting boring. Too many things to do, with little consideration of users. Leadership is pushing for unrealistic timelines leaving very little room for creativity. Work is getting very draining. Maybe it’s time to look for another job.

You are right my brother, you give part of your life and spend that time in your job. Better if the work is meaningful, not everyone is privileged to find meaningful job but eventually finds some job that satisfies the needs. And money alone doesn’t give satisfaction you need to spend it on right things

An employee is also running a business and his product is time. Just because it is not selling at the right price to the right people, it does not mean it should be sold for cheap or to the wrong people.

To get job satisfaction, I agree completely with you - need to believe in the end-goal of the company. But also don’t forget that you are an employee - when the times are bad, you could also be affected (God forbid) and all these thoughts may not matter. So be more practical and less emotional.

I look for meaning only in my own business. At my salaried employment I work for money, period. Expecting meaning full work at the place of employment is stupidity. You should expect to pay nothing more. Think like a doctor, you focus only on the symptoms that they tell you. Your job is not to detect anything. You treat based on symptoms they provide and collect your fees. That's how I work at the place of employment l.
