I have seen lots of people joining startup for 2 main reasons - Pay & learning. I am fine with people joining just for pay (depends on person), but little skeptical with the "learning" aspect. Having 10 years of experience, I have worked for both Startup & Stable companies.
Currently we see hardly any startup being actually profitable/sustainable. So the tech solutions applied mostly deal with the short-term profit and growth. This often result in over-engineered solutions and unnecessary tools being used. Again, it's not that what we learn in startup is waste. But would you rather learn building long-term sustainable software or short-term with unreasonable user-base?

How do people climb up/become more important in startups as employees?

If they have the right culture then showing excellency in your role, helping out others in the team, having opinions on decisions taken (not just for the sake of it) should help you get closer to the decision makers. 
  
 Remember that at an early stage startup, everything revolves around the product, and you will be rewarded for aligning with that. 
  
 Speaking from experience, you will be involved in "the action" in a team of 30 people either way

With the host of startups closing down, was curious to know what does founder net worth usually result in and how do they generally make money for them along the way. Few questions-

1. Do founder sell percentage of own shares in Series A and B raises? I would assume there would be some checks on this but want to know what's the practical reality of this and if this happens what's the amount a founder can make through this 


2. If the startup is clear it has to shut down, what typically happens? Acquisitions? Insolvency?


3. Assume a Series B  level startup with valuation around 150 cr with say 10 Cr annual revenue and 40 cr losses and 30% founder stake and it's clear it has to shut down. In the absence of any acquisition, what money comes to the founder

Founder wealth gains in failed startups

well placed to answer this.
We recently shut down.
we had raised about 4.8 mn USD and were operational for 3 years.
When we decided to shut down we had about 500k in the bank.
The primary reason was so that we could clear all our dues and liabilities well.
We paid 2.5-3 months of severance, laptops to our team.
Then we had to clear a lot of statutory payments, which were usually taken care of from the monthly cash flows.
Then we hired a high charging consulting firm to ensure proper due diligence of closure process so that there are no surprises later, whether it was around taxation, vendor payments or any contracts.
Then we hired a law firm for the closure process.
After all this, the company was left with about 150k USD on the books.
This money was paid out to us two founders as severance payout.
In the 3 years of operations the founders in general averaged at less than 25% of their market salary, which meant depletion of personal resources completely.
The severance amount received by each of us was as good as 60-80% of our market salary.
Net net, financially, less money earned from salary + severance than would have earned in 3 years of my market salary job.

• Years active
• No of users
• No of employees
• Culture? ( general lack of bureaucracy, etc )

Or is it something else? For each trait above, several exceptions come to mind.

I have an offer from an early stage company in crypto space and i need help in making a decision if is it worth or not. As the sector is highly under the regulatory radar so business is at risk whenever new regulations comes is as in case with the most fintech companies as well. Also do you think crypto does hold some real value and is here to stay for long?

What do you think is the best startup

How do you evaluate the risk and the potential of the offer from an early-stage (seed stage done) startup in India?

For example (hypothetical), a seasoned leader / founder is starting a new startup in fintech industry (e.g., next zerodha, etc). They raise 10 million USD at 30 million USD post-money valuation. 

I took fintech as example specifically to ensure it's not only engineers that will be needed from the beginning.

* Now, If I were to join as a founding team member (founding engineer for example), what kind of salary, ESOPs one should expect as minimum?

* If I were to join after 2-3 engineers are already hired (so not founding engg anymore), what is realistic expectation? 

* What are some questions I must ask to evaluate if the offer and equity I am being given is good or not.

(I know there's probably no way to generalise a "good/bad offer" as that likely depends also on very specific situation of the startup - like what problem is it trying to tackle, and what is the potential of it, etc. So feel free to share your experience as well if not advice)

Evaluating risk of joining a seed stage startup

I recently worked at a startup and it was terrible. 

To be honest, I still worked at one of the better ones but it just sucked. 

Some of the clear downsides I see 

- Survival mode leads to chaos. You can be treated anyway and asked to leave whenever  even though you left big opportunities to be here 
- Brand loss to find next job (Big problem)
- Trying to make you feel unworthy(Doesn't bother me but I have seen people lose self confidence)
- Loss of opportunity to build real skills like building sustainable teams for the long run

I think over all working at a startup especially early teams is a losing proposition. Do it only if -
 - you know the founders/team well 
- you know the industry and market well and it is a bet you personally believe in
- you are secure enough in life that if you go back to your job, you will easily get employed 


For middle class kids, startups are the worst bets one can take.

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working as a SDE at a startup with about three years of experience. I'm considering making a move, and I've received an offer from an early-stage startup where I'd be joining as a founding engineer.
My main motivation for wanting to switch to some startup is the potential for high learning and growth opportunities, especially since I'm still relatively early in my career. However, I'm a bit torn between targeting multinational corporations (MNCs) like FAANG and sticking with startups.On one hand, MNCs offer more stability and potentially valuable stock options, which can be more than just paper money. 
So, my question is, should I prioritize learning and growth by staying with startups, or should I also consider the FAANG tag and potential stock benefits? Also Would there be any added advantage when I later interview at some FAANG , after working as a founding engineer for 3-4 years in some startup (given I’ll have to build multiple things from scratch and owning multiple modules). The base package for the offer I hold is roughly 
equivalent to what FAANGs pay at my level.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have been offered a package with somewhat lower fixed component and somewhat higher ESOPs. Need insightful pointers here. TIA :)

The ESOP is a bit of a blind bet.  
  
 It's paper money that can get you a windfall if all goes to plan and execution, solution, pricing, market readiness amongst other things, all line up over the next few years.  
  
 I wouldn't take a pay cut in lieu of ESOPs.  Keep the real money real and the paper money as an outside bet.
