Question for software folks

After 15 or 18 years of experience, what do folks do, are there many levels above principal engineer? Do they become CTO ? Financially independent so retire ?

I know some guys in my project with an experience of 15+ years who are now at Senior Manager or Associate Director level, who mostly do project management, budgeting and resource optimization.
