Reason why people change careers and how they did it.

Has anyone changed careers in their late 20s or early 30s? If yes, what made you do it? How did you figure what to do next?

Has anyone here, moved away from Software Development to something else. Maybe in a completely different direction, like became a graphics designer, or Game developer etc. or in a similar direction, like went towards Product Management or something similar. If yes, then I want to know your experience with the switch, and the steps you took to make it happen. I got into Software engineering 2-3 years ago (attracted by the salaries) but now I just don’t feel like doing it anymore at all. I asked a friend who’s a PM, and his take on this was, if i wanted to keep earning how much I currently do (20-30 LPA), and want to go even further than that, then SDE is the only option, PMs do not get paid that much amount, when compared to SDEs in the longer run. What’s your take on this?

Like for example - Engineering in CSE but not working as software engineer Left normal corporate jobs, started freelancing Found out entirely new profession to do? Farming? Curious on what made you take that decision! What the world convinced you about the decision? Did your friends and family treated you differently when you didn't walk the conventional path?

Hi folks, I am new here so need your suggestions. I work as a research associate at a market research firm. It's wfh so I have been managing my expenses pretty well. However the work culture is horrible. We all are expected to work for 9hrs minimum everyday. And by work means, creating docs with minimal calling. The work everyday has unrealistic deadlines. I am an MBA in marketing and Hr (dual spec.). Can you suggest what I should do?

Questioning life choices currently. I think I gave taken the wrong path for myself. I don't really know what would suit me. I know that it's alright to f around and figure out stuff early career but I'm worried about my salary and career trajectory. As in, I do not want to be stuck in entry level roles forever. What do you think? Any anecdotes?

Why switch? Why not switch? What were the motivations that you had when you thought of switching and whether the result was favourable to you or not?

I am aged 30 ,UM ,Male , have been working in IT for close to 9 years now . But I never had an option to quit this job due to my family financial situations. Now I saved enough money for my parents. I want to switch my career to Semiconductors technology (Chip designing, Physical design etc ). I don’t have any prior experience or not even workshops experience in that field but I always wanted to be. It might sound like foolish thought, but I feel like hell here doing this job without any interest (but I always received outstanding feedback from my leadership as well as clients). If I continue here , my next designation would be Manager. Long story but here are my questions … 1. Should I continue in IT or switch my career ? 2. I won’t get same package as that I m getting ryt now But Does organisations accept my reason and provide an opportunity aa fresher ? 3. As I m unmarried and don’t have anyone other than my parents as my dependents and habituated to a peaceful for quite some time, Is it a good decision to pursue my career now , knowing the fact that I might struggle with financial needs.? Your genuine answer could help people like me who are trapped in this kind of dilemma.. TIA

I think about seriously quitting my job atleast once every few months but I've stuck it out here for almost 3 years now. I don't know if it's just me but the idea of putting myself out there and starting afresh at a new company is just terrifying - the struggle to find something exciting but stable, being evaluated at interviews all over again, the uncertainty of fitting into a new team and having to prove myself all over again at a new work place - all of this just puts me off from taking any real action I see everyone around me talking about career growth and taking up new opportunities. And rationally, I get it. I get that there are tons of benefits to changing jobs - better salary, escaping a toxic workplace, etc. etc. I truly admire people who make these frequent shifts - seriously, how do people navigate this?

What's the one thing you had wanted to change / start / stop doing this year - call it resolution at the beginning of the year? How are you doing on that? I wanted to get into a better rhythm on fitness and sustain the good eating habits from last year. Where am I? After a wasted JFM quarter, did somewhat okay in Apr, May and June. July has been not too bad. Baby steps: trying to get 3-4 hours in a week for fitness. I have realised habit formation is a function of stacking. When I workout on Saturday, I want to go to the gym on Sunday too and then on Monday and Tuesday and so on.. When I miss 2 days in a row, then I degrade to saying okay, let's start on Sunday - as a fresh week. Trying to break out of that and convincing myself today is as good as Sunday. :P Definitely improved, but a long way to go. Would love to know about others here on and hope to get more inspiration. As they say, one day at a time. So do you want to wait till Jan'24? :)
