Autoscaling doesn't mean there can't be some potential fallout from the code. Testing at the scale these services work in is impossible and there might be edge cases which might break your service in unexpected ways. You need something like this when you know you'd be dealing with record breaking traffic. Remember, autoscale will scale the bad code too cascading the effects.

It is great that we have these companies offering convenience, Following incidents just did not feel right..
1. Albinder (BlinkIt Founder) tweeted that someone ordered 81 condoms which is invasion of privacy.
2. Driving Agenda - Ritesh Agarwal had a tweet saying occupancy in Nainital and Goa is 100% for OYO and another tweet saying more app users in Ayodhya.
It is about supply and demand, Oyo has a minuscule presence in Goa..
In Argument 2, You are assuming that the Hotstar team doesn't have a war room type situation during IPL or big events. There was a time when IPL became too big that the senior management of their CDN providers used to sit with Hotstar team in their offices.
Even Flipkart employees used to stay in offices during Big billion days, all these are experiences you learn and grow from.
If you are at Amazon, this is common but less publicised here. All big sales are planned with people on standby across functions, even in stock managers!
