How to negotiate salary as a designer? 🚨

It's been a year and a half since I began my career as a User experience designer at a product company (my first job). The startup I work at has not started generating revenue yet.. and is running on the funds raised in the pre-seed round. The founders are an amazing bunch of people and so is the team. I'm super happy working here, but the only thing I would like is a salary raise since my salary hasn't been revised since I joined. My current CTC is 5 LPA and I own ESOPs worth approx 2L. All of us at the office are close knit and this makes having the salary revision conversation even harder.. how do I initiate a conversation about this and not feel awkward?

Be non emotional when the topic is related to compensation. When working act like money doesn’t matter But when asking for a raise or negotiating act like it’s the only consideration. Your manager will try to appeal to your human side and try to remind you owe them something. In reality you are just providing your services for a sum of money. Be very level headed and mentally prepared before hand. You can just communicate on text message if you feel like your manager will have an upper hand if it’s a live conversation. I find it easy to think before I speak when I use text format.

Agree with above point. If uncomfortable, have the conversation on phone Or text. Have a document ready with the exact words you will say. Also, try predicting all the questions you are going to get and write their answers down. Do not use negative connotations, for eg: I will not be happy below 7 LPA - I'll be more comfortable if the CTC were pushed to 7 LPA.

Okayy, thanks! My conversation itself will be with the CTO only, there's a flat hierarchy (he comes to the office everyday). So having it over text or call is kinda tough. I can understand that at the end of the day I'm an employee only and that before joining there was a conversation on salary negotiation.. but now that I am a part of the company and love the culture, it's difficult to initiate a conversation on the same

Salary negotiations have nothing to do with loving the culture. What's deserved is deserved. Check out market trends ask for what you deserve and what you bring to the table.

How much Salary to expect? [INDIA] 🇮🇳

I am a Product Designer at an Edtech Startup (raising 20m Series B soon) with almost a year (1) of full time experience but overall almost 3 (including internships) at some great companies. As I am looking for a change what salary should I expect? Considering:- - I have a design degree from a Non-IIT/Non-NID Tier 1 University (known for good engineers) [so good foundation hopefully] - The companies I have interned at range from Japanese MNC/Conglomerate, Indian Fashion focused E-Commerce Giant, Indian Food Tech/Delivery Giant & an Indian Digital Transformation Giant. - The average stipend I earned at these companies was around 40K/month. - The salary I earn right now every month is between 70 - 90K - I believe I have Got good Product focused UX knowledge. [Part of the Product team not a seperate Design Team] - Not another Figma/Framer drooling Designer. - Many of my peers from my alma mater are placed in Big Tech or Desi Giants owned by Foreign Giants So what salary should I be expecting? (Keeping aside the ESOP/RSU part) Is ~ 1.25L/month in hand is right ask? Please suggest.

when to switch jobs

I joined this startup recently as a solo product designer (this is my first fte role) and i’m being payed 14lpa (12 base+2 bonus) now although the people here really like my work but I personally don’t feel like i’m learning anything new to become a better product designer. I always feel the lack of having a senior PD. How much time should i spend in this startup so that when I switch jobs i can get a decent hike as well.

I joined a start-up (SDE 1) after working in an IT service giant (one of the WITCH) for the past 2 years. There we didn't have any discussion regarding the amount of raise expected, they used to just assign us the percentage (peanuts) that they felt. Here in the start-up I have heard that we have a say about how much % increase we are expecting post review cycle. I have some questions, 1. Do managers generally know about their subordinate's salary? 2. If not, then how do such discussions take place? Just based on % increment? 3. Or Only feedback is discussed with the manager and salary negotiation is done with HR (who knows my salary)?

Hi I am working in a pre-seed startup. The product is good and the industry has scope to grow. I am their first hiring, as well as the only Backend Engineer till now. I am about to complete 1 year. Company's current valuation is 2M at 11% and I have recieved 5Lakh as Esops vested in 4 years in last year's CTC. I want to negotiate for a direct equity handover apart from my ESOPS at Uniocorn valuation of the company with my CTO in coming months like 1% equity. ESOP and Salary advise

Work as the only SPM at a seed startup in SaaS. Salary is 45 lpa and 12 lakhs of ESOP over 4 years . Only PM reporting to the CEO and we have doubled revenue in the last 12 months I have been here and contributing . I think I got low balled on the ESOP , appraisal discussions are around the corner and I would like to increase the ESOP What is the an average number ? Have seen the product folks report and 30lps seems to be the right number . Looking for other similar folks to advise

Salary that needs to be negotiated

I have about 5 YOE and looking for a job change. While I received so many calls from startups for SSE backend roles. During initial discussions I often let the HR know that I am earning 28 lakhs as CTC and I ask for 40 lakhs CTC, they say that they will get back to me but they never do so. Am I doing something wrong? Am I asking for too much. Should I wait for the market to get back to normal? PS: I definitely have the major set of skills they are expecting for the job role.
