Flipkart Plans 100 Dark Stores Ahead of Big Billion Days Sale

  • Flipkart aims to have around 100 dark stores operational by the launch of Flipkart Minutes, currently accessible to select users in certain pincodes.
  • The move is part of Flipkart’s strategy to compete with Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart this festive season, focusing on fast delivery for non-grocery segments.
  • Dark stores are being tested with employees at Flipkart’s Bengaluru headquarters, with plans to stabilize and scale up the service in specific areas.
  • Flipkart’s quick commerce push is driven by revenue potential, with top platforms like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and Blinkit expected to surpass $1 Bn in revenue for FY24.
  • This development follows Flipkart’s expansion into digital payments and fintech products, highlighting its strategy to adapt to the evolving digital commerce landscape.

What even is going to be the differentiator?

Zepto kills it at speed. Blinkit kills it at speed and depth of catalogue.

Hard to imagine where Flipkart can stand. Especially given Q Commerce can work in only Tier 1 and 2 where these brands have a heavy footing.

Flipkart does not even have a brand presence anymore in top 5 cities!

if the market is big enough, multiple players thrive, good for the market itself

Been buying weekly groceries from Flipkart, insane prices at an acceptable delivery timeline - not instant but comes by next morning.

Flipkart as an ecomm player wins in Tier 2+ India by a big margin, such is their supply chain muscle - will be interesting to see this muscle playout for quick comm!

Flipkart does know how to scale ops. Ekart is almost 2x the size of delhivery :/

Super interesting, what is relevant here is whether they can actually acquire demand.

Consumer disassociation of the brand from eComm to quick comm will speak to the quality of their distribution prowess.

Unrelated but Real life example of flipkart's reach and delivery efficiency.

At my grandparents place, nearest flipkart node is 20kms yet fk grocery delivers edible stuff within a week. No other online grocery player serving the pincode 325202

FK will even deliver a freaking refrigerator or air conditioner to village where even the Post Office doesn't deliver letters.

Flipkart is shit, they ban pincodes.

Bigger question would be is it winner take all scenario?
