This is exactly what diversification will do, but this is just one side. When the markets fall, that is the other side

last one year market has been pretty kind to everyone. Even random stock pick has given good returns but wait once there will be downturn 🙂 However i agree lot of diversification in portfolio will not attract good returns. but it wise to have 5-10 stocks rather then 2
