Are we actually designing according to users needs?
I feel we don't design according to users needs and if we do, we are still imposing the solution which is designed in such a way that has a learning curve. And if there is going to be learning big or small, why don't we experiment and introduce such type of design which has a learning curve but it'll be worth using that.
Are you saying that current design solutions don’t account for *every* user’s needs and ease-of-use?
Because having some learning curve is unavoidable.
There are definitely solutions which are more intuitive than others.
This is even exploited in dark patterns to actually deter users from doing “undesirable” actions.
But, in general, something that is intuitive for one set of people won’t always be intuitive for another.
It’s on the designers to test solutions with varied samples from their targeted user base to ensure it’s usable. But it’s never foolproof.
I feel a learning curve is inevitable as we explore more and more complex problems to solve for.
Also, as products grow, they tend to add users from adjacent user groups - who have utility for some of its features/experiences, but not all.
And then it’s a balancing act between keeping old users happy and accommodating the concerns of new ones. So on, and so forth.
All that said, it helps to follow certain industry standards, and test widely to ensure you are accessible the most people, if not all.

I agree with most of things you said and as you said learning curve is inevitable then why not explore with designs which has a bit learning curve but will be worth adding to a feature or app.
Yes, it’s definitely worth trying out new features which offer significant value - even if they come at the cost of an added learning curve.
The real challenge there often comes from convincing all existing shareholders to look past the status quo of metrics - which do risk being destabilised by such changes, at least in the short term. 😅

If your design has a steep learning curve then you are probably targeting the wrong user base
