How do you structure your day? Do you do all teh coding in the morning and then do everything else after that?

Generally I priorities writing my own features first unless a review is blocked on me. 
 Post that I pick up these things.

9+ yoe. Still actively writing code but mostly building internal tools/libraries that can be used across teams. Other than that rest of the time is spent bug fixing, estimating new features, guiding junior devs.

2+ YOE, moved to a us startup few months back and now I write a lot of Go here. I probably spend around 4-5 hours everyday writing code and I’m glad that the time spent is fairly divided across writing features, fixing bugs and writing solid unit tests for them.

I mean it depends. If the priority is stabilising existing system, you’ll be fixing bugs and improving upon existing codebase.  
  
 If the focus is on new features or new product line, you’ll be writing a lot of fresh code. And reusing stuff from stable systems.

What do u think the career trajectory will be for Native Mobile developers after 4-5 Years of experience? ( Android/Ios) 

Personally I think there are less senior/staff roles in india unless we pivot to BE or people roles we will not have an uptrend in our career. 

And what do u think about Hybrid frameworks ( like RN and Flutter) ? should we adopt them ASAP ? or not required to grow in the career ladder ?

Native Mobile developers - need ur thoughts.

I have 1 YOE and I often miss my deadlines which causes spillover. The tasks assigned to me get completed by me, and I face very little difficulty in it.

Also, when someone asks me about a different part of the codebase, I am unable to answer confidently. I tried reading documentation, but couldn't figure out much. But still I do read the documentation sometimes.

I identified distractions and removed them, mostly my phone. But recently I noticed that I still miss deadlines, but the reason for that is I take a long time to figure out the issue/feature that I am going to develop.

So far I have tried
- Removing distractions, by uninstalling SM apps 
- White boarding the issue beforehand
- Communicating better and early.

Things I am going to try
- Use debugger instead of logs(I know, should have done before)
- Document before implementing (Didn't know, that this was a standard practice before)

feeling like I am literally in the worst phase of my life. Our company is taking ownership of an abroad project and those abroad folks are not supportive or even if they support us then they give little information so that we can't take ownership. so we freshers have to figure out everything, and now even after figuring out, my manager and higher management asks me anything with respect to the product(features, deployment, anything literally- it's a big & complex project) even though I am a fresher and don't even have the proper knowledge and then ask us to explain to them what we know, and it's literally frustrating to explain to every single guy every single time. Because the manager asks to prepare to explain to him and then to the higher manager and then whenever something is there they keep asking again and again to give a presentation or our ideas about it, but they don't even ask abroad folks when they are the one who is doing the work. I just feel like I can't keep up with this and I want to resign. How to say no to the manager for doing a particular work again and again or should I resign because I am feeling very low right now and still after 1 year it looks like I have wasted the time because I got to write code for maybe 5% and 90-95% feels like college presentation. Every time there's something and they ask the same thing 3-4 times, sometimes it would be give the x info or then y info and like this only  and because of that i can't do the real work or work on new features because the Indian manager and higher officials keep giving extra work which they should ask from US folks. What should I do please suggest

Application Engineer

Yesterday I started work around 11.30 and spent about 2-3 hours in the morning & afternoon doing code reviews , tech discussions, meetings etc. and then spent most of the day chilling with my parents. (WFH)

I felt a bit guilty about working so less (and there was some work to do) so I put in a 3 hour focused time to write some code/implement some requirements. 

Total of about 5-6 hours of actual time spent actually working. This has been about the average for me for a year now; this is how a typical work day usually looks like. At home I usually spend maybe 6-8 hours in front of the laptop at my desk out of which 5-6 hours would be actual time spent working. (It’s a LOT less at office, that’s a different story altogether)

Is this too less or is this the norm for software engineers today? What does the number look like for you, how many hours do you spend in front of your laptop & how many hours do you actually work every day?

Hey folks, i hope you all are doing well!

I have around 6 yrs of experience now including 6 months of internship in Enterprise Support role for Kubernetes product in a big Product based MNC.

I have been in the same company for 5.5 years post my internship, within these 5.5 years I switched to our cloud services team like a DevOps role 2 years back. 

My role is a Senior Software Engineer but I am not coding much rather its mix of both Operations and Coding sometimes, because of which my development knowledge is rusty and also my DSA too. But I have been able to get things done which are necessary as a part of my daily job. Be it feature development, releases, operations and troubleshooting customer environments. So performance wise I’m doing well I believe. And I’m getting below package.

So I got hikes also the package I’m getting is around (35 LPA Fixed + 5 Lacs bonus) have stocks around 10 lacs(just 2.5 lacs per year) 

Now the main point is even though I’m earning sone money 

1] I’m not learning much from the software development perspective and I think work wise I don’t have much experience in pure development, so now I’m stuck how can I make a move to a good unicorn startup as a SDE/SRE? Please suggest any ideas to make such a move.

2] I strongly believe that I’m earning less than what I should be earning after spending 6 yrs in IT. Nowadays 3-4 So now I’m thinking of switching to a different company but again the point [1] comes in my way.

3] How much minimum amount of I should be earning as a base salary, bonus and stocks in a big product MNC or a Bangalore startup ? 

Looking for advices to learn and which way should I be taking to learn more and get a job where I’ll be doing proper Dev work, please advice on the way to take to do this transition.

Different companies follow different methods to choose their workforce, so if you've given/taken couple of interviews yourself can you provide insight on how you do it and why you think it works? Also what would you change about the general process of tech hiring?

Let me go first. 
0. (obvious, but) Minimal weightage for DSA - 
When I conduct interviews, I rarely ask DSA problems. It rarely gives me an opportunity to assess the candidate's breadth of knowledge, and come to a conclusion of how much experience they have with the tasks that they're going to do on the job. What if they've practiced the same problem / variation of the problem that I ask? I want to assess technical competence, not their acting skills. 

1. (debatable) Culture fit should be given a higher weightage than skills - 
Skills can be learnt, behavior and character takes time to build.  It most often hinders the progress of the team. 

2. Stop setting standards for the interview that your team doesn't follow in the first place -
I've had friends who had to pass interviews of high standards only to work in shitty teams. They were yearning for an achha din but it never came.

I am currently working as Frontend developer (NextJS) (React). I have 1.5+ YOE .

Recently i have started applying in different companies for FE role but none of them reverted back to me except 1 startup (that was in very early stage)

I want to switch because - 

1. Salary is less (9lpa).

2. Here they only focus on new features not code quality and optimization.

3. I want to work on scale

Is Applying for Jobs without referral is waste of time

1. You are building a software that otherwise could be built by a 12 year old kid, if given proper training.
2. You cannot code if I cut off google, stackoverflow & related websites.
3. You are just concerned about producing the output quickly because a. your work is time bound, b. you want to stand out from others.
4. You attend countless meetings that carry no value, thanks to Agile.
5. 10 people write code for the same software which otherwise could have been written by 1 person.
6. You write pages of documents just because you are expected to write for the team, compliance & stuff.
7. You don’t care about non-functional requirements as nobody asked for it.
8. You are spending hours together in coding a simple thing & you are branded a hard-worker.
9. Or you don’t spend much time in coding because you impress people with tech jargons that you learnt recently. You are branded a smart-worker.
10. The code you write will be completely rewritten in next 3-4 years just to catch up with the industry trends.
11. Your only goal is to earn loads of money which otherwise could not be earned in other engineering fields. That’s one of the reasons why you are on grapevine.
