Sir Ratan Tata's Legacy: A Tribute to an Iconic Leader

Today, I feel sad. We truly lost somebody who exemplified doing 'good' along with doing 'business'.

I'd recently read the book ‘The Story of Tata’ and had learnt the good they have done, which is always difficult when you're a capitalist. But Tata truly is built different, and Ratan Tata took the torch so far ahead.

I started out career at TCS like many here, so that’s the most obvious way I was benefitted from what they have made. It was a start, and a start is what one often needs.

But beyond it: there are many things

1. He took Tata from $6Bn in revenue to $100Bn in revenue under his reign

2. ⁠Acquired brands like Tetley, JLR which are honestly a big deal for an Indian company 

3. ⁠Nano, which failed, was one of his noble pet projects. It showed his thought process.

4. ⁠Support to startups: literally every founder is putting up stories of their interactions with him, how ever present was he

All while donating 60% of profits to social causes via Tata Trusts (that’s a function of his ancestors and how they set the company)

We’ve lost a legend. We’ve lost an example in positive business building.

I hope we remember and learn from Ratan Tata for long. ♥️

Absolutely echo what you have written 
 It was his calling to be an industrialist and billionaire (because of his family). But so many of his choices reflected a noble intent. 
  
 And that’s all it takes. Ambani Adani etc will never see the love we’re seeing outpouring for Tata. 
  
 And I hope that becomes an example for more business leaders.

 But YET ....feels like lost someone special, someone like a family member,  someone who had our back, someone who was a human first, and cherished humanity!!!

I am only regretting that Government Of India honoured many young people with Bharat Ratna but couldn't do it for him

The greatest tribute one can give to Sir Ratan Tata is to know what TATAs did to India and why we should be grateful to them. I wrote an article about "TA-TA to Mr.TATA" & know at least a few things about their contribution to India from starting India's first steel plant to contributing 47,000 crores in tax i.e, 2.24% of total India's tax in 2017. The TATAs are known for starting businesses on the principles of philanthropy( being a Parsi following Zoroastrian faith)

This book covers how Cyrus Mistry(having his forefathers organisation SP Group holding 19.2% shares in TATA) was apppointed as the Chairman and was the shortest Chairman to be in the board, being fired by TATA just after 4 years(Nov 2011 - Sept 2016). He was fired of having personal interests to route business from TATA’s to his forefathers company SP Group of which Mistry was a 50% shareholder - thus not visioning for company’s best interests but his.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran(CEO of TCS - TATA’s organisation within IT umbrella) was a probable candidate but was shrugged off by the board considering he looked after TCS - the highest revenue generating business in TATA’s cap.

Chandra(Natarajan Chandrasekaran) was now appointed as Chairman.

The TATA could not continue as a family empire because kids could not be born to leading faces of TATA, unfortunately. But being Parsis and following certain Parsi rules, kids were adopted from extended families.
Ratan Tata is son-of-the-first-wife of Naval Tata(adopted by Navajbai Sett). Ratan Tata’s parents got divorced when he was 3YO, and he has been raised by his step grandmother thus.

JRD Tata was not a direct heir to TATA group either.

1822 - Trading Firm by Nusserwanji
1859 - Jamsetji graduated and masted commodities. Opened Cotton and Opium trade with China
1869 - Jamsetji along with father Nusserwanji bought and converted Oil Mill at Chinchpokli to Cotton Mill
1871 - sold this Cotton Mill
1874 - founded Empress Cotton Mills in Nagpur

Jamsetji set 4 long term corporate goals which included acts of PHILANTHROPY:
1. Iron and steel plant
2. hydroelectric power to india - 1915; completed by ratanji tata
3. world class institute of science - 1896 to 1909, Institute of Science and Technology, blr
4. World class hotel - taj palace, mumbai, 1903.

Summary: Book “the Story of TATA”

Deeply saddened to hear this news that the man who has given this world so much to look for and the one who has loved animals to the extremities. Why it is feeling like a personal loss. His aura is so powerful that light in his smile and the purest form of his heart and kindness towards each and everyone around. He brought glories to the industrial and corporate world. I saw so many people posted on Instagram stories about his kindness and his love for animals. But not even 1% of them would follow his values and principles.People like show offs. He is not some trending news that someone has updated a story or status so even you should do it . Just feel and understand who he was and how he changed the entire world how he brought the difference to the lives of people and those countless animals. Being the richest at heart and still being so down to earth can we just try to become at least 0.1 of his kindness and his values then I am sure our country will be a developed economy sooner which was his dream. Let’s not just keep him to status or stories let’s bring his kindness and values in daily lives.

Ratan Tata's Tribute to Economic Reformer

- Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata's mortal remains will be kept at the NCPA lawns in Mumbai for public homage on October 10, 2024. 
- The remains will be moved to the Worli Crematorium for final rites at 4:00 pm. 
- Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on October 10. 
- The national tricolour on government offices will be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning. 
- All entertainment events for the day have been cancelled.
