My first job is starting tomorrow
Need advice from your experiences, dos and donts etc. what would you tell your 20 year old self? and the mistakes you regret
Aight so I'm joining my first ever job next week. Super scared and thinking a lottttt. What to do? How to go? What to wear? What to be brushed up with? etc etc. How the hell does my uncomfortable self make a good impression? Any advice will be appreciated thanks you guys
Be simple. Read about imposter syndrome. Be professional but make friends, find a good mentor. Ask questions if you do not understand. Learn how to use stackoverflow and chatgpt. Ask for feedback for your work and Take feedback constructively Keep atleast one day or half a day totally off. No screens at all, otherwise you'll burn out in 6 months. Always think about your career rather than about job. Try to Learn something new everyday
Thank you for this!
I think @RemoteLute36 covered a lot.
I'll add on what to wear. Since its week time, go offline stores and try smart casuals. polo t-shirts/shirts, straight paints. If you are joining startups, you can go casual too. But I do think you should avoid shorts and t-shirts in office.
Wear stuff that make you feel confident and comfortable. 8 hours or more in same attire can be daunting.
You are lucky independence sale are going on
Call everyone by their first name, regardless of the hierarchy. Don’t call anyone Sir/Madam!!
Be eager to learn in the beginning to set a good impression. Nobody expects you to start working from day 1 as if you know everything, take time to figure out your work, don’t hesitate in asking questions to your peers. Just take it easy!!
Also try to establish certain boundaries for yourself from day 1. A lot of boomer Indian managers might call you late in the night for work, expect you to work on weekends. Just don’t and make that clear in a subtle way. Will help you a lot in the long run.
