Yaar Hotstar toh mai soch raha hu, mai kharid lu, bus thode $2-4 billion kam pad rahe hai. Matlab ek-do lakh ka jugad hai, baki kam pad rahe hai.

Fufa aur taau sai manga hai, dekho kya bolte hai aab vo.

Disney+Hotstar went from the OTT platform to topple Netflix and taking a huge chunk of the market share to losing IPL rights and about to close shop. I'm not sure how they have failed so spectacularly and continue to do so

GigglyNarwhal

Content is king. Amazon Prime realized it in India and made India specific content, one that appeals to masses. Whereas Netflix usually makes shows for modern India. As soon as Hotstar lost rights for major IPs the downward spiral started.

They started losing when Uday Shankar quit. Uday is one of the sharpest and smartest brains. He joined forces with ex-boss’ son, started a new firm that invested in Viacom (which is owned by Reliance and Paramount). A lot of top guys started quitting when the shots were called from Disney HQ rather than being given a free hand. Uday, when at Star (prior Disney takeover) was given a free hand and took it to stupendous heights. If Disney and Star does get acquired by Jio, it will be a sweet victory for everyone, but the guy who will have the last laugh will be Uday Shankar. Not stretching, but the way Uday’s career was shaping up, he could’ve been one of the contenders for top job at Disney. But, they lost him, and now they’re losing Disney and Star too!

I hope they put jio content on Hotstar tech and not the other way around. JioCinema sucks

SqueakyQuokka

I agree. However, if you remember the early days of hotstar, it had similar experience.

I am surprised at how bad JIO cinema streaming tech is, being such a big company n all

They ruined it to a point it is worth selling off or shutting only, I think

Ruined it how?

Holy shit, this is big

How did they screw it up, it felt literally until last year this time that they were one of the best performing OTTs

The one by one…

How powerful will Reliance get 🤯

They are icebergs, 90% of things they do, most of us don't know.

BubblyCupcake

As far as tech goes, most of original hotstar team is working at jio already. If this goes through codebase will get a reunion with their OCs 😂

DizzyMuffin

Then why is JioCinema’s apps still garbage?

BubblyCupcake
BubblyCupcake

The Backend isn’t bad if it scaled to 2.5 concurrent users during IPL. App UI and stuff will take time and get better. I wouldn’t bet against Viacom 18’s tech team.

If they sell, it will not be free

GigglyNarwhal
GigglyNarwhal

It will be free as till they get maybe 20% of market share. It's hard to get a market share more than that in OTT space. Even in USA market is very segmented with every production house launching their own platform. Amazon Prime is winning in India surprisingly

WobblyBagel
WobblyBagel

Prime is just winning because of Amazon itself. Prime Video is an additional benefit onto Prime.

QuirkyNoodle

Didn’t think it’d get to this. Had a few doubts when a majority of the great shows moved from Hotstar to JioCinema, but this is just on another level.

QuirkyNoodle

Also, curious to know about what’ll happen to Marvel and Star Wars. We’ll probably have to subscribe to Disney+ separately.

GigglyNarwhal
GigglyNarwhal

This will be bottleneck for the deal. Ambani bhai will push to get rights for Disney IPs. Disney may have to comply since it's a distress sell

i suspected this when HBO moved from hotstar to jio. but didn't anticipate to be this quick
