How should I ask for a raise?
I work for a early stage startup (A) right now since about 1.5yrs at base 18lpa (no appraisal since my tenure even though I was told they have a bi-annual cycle, but It never happened) I have another company (B), willing to offer base 28lpa (but will require relocation). I still haven't interviewed at B, and was wondering if i can should talk to A asking for an appraisal? I'm also not sure if i should mention about B at all. How much i understand A will be like let us launch something and then we can talk about appraisals, but this has been going on since a year now and we tend to change the architecture or the methodology everytime we almost have something ready to ship. That being said still I'd rather stay at A than relocate for B at the moment. How should I go about this, any suggestions? TIA
Honestly you'll have to take a judgement call here and see what kind of people A are
I've seen a lot of people say having an offer in hand is the best way to get a raise at your workplace, but in practice, a lot of senior people get sour after you do that and it may ruin your work experience
On the other hand, I've worked in startups all my life (not very long, a couple of years) and I know first hand that things are just so chaotic here it sometimes... Sort of doesn't occur to them to give a raise
Not in a bad way, more like, they're busy with compliance, business and regulations etc so much, proper appraisals and promotions is the last thing on their mind, hence, a reminder might actually be helpful
What you can do is find the friendliest senior/supervisor and have a sort of informal chat with them. Mention something along the lines of your family expecting you to contribute more or pushing you to work in a more traditional environment or get married or something like that, and try to gauge out what are your growth prospects, then take a final call

Yep this is exactly what I'm concerned about.
And yep i agree with the rest as well, just that I'm kinda the senior-most myself and after me it's directly the CXOs
Yep I'll try to have an informal talk with them and let's see what they say.
Was also curious, should i even mention that B is willing to pay this much, or should I just ask for a appraisal and see how much they offer?
Because I'm kinda sure if i don't give a number they'll lowball, but giving a number means I'm considering a switch making relations possibly bad

This is the usual trick indian startups do to underpay people. If i were in your situation I would tell my manager that I have an offer from another place. Ask them if they can match it. If they refuse join the other company. Or forever' remain underpaid
The thing is joining B is either way not something I'd want to do. Mainly because it's not a place i imagine myself working. The relocation situation makes it even more unlikely.
I'd much rather prefer to use this offer somehow to get a guarented appraisal at A instead of a "yeah we'll think about it after launch"
Speaking from experience. Act confident and tell company A that you're being poached for 28 LPA, if they can't increase the salary by a significant amount, you're leaving.

Yes keep it very simple!
Your aim is to increase Money.
The company's aim is to get the work done.
So clearly you will work for a company where you will get your desired pay.
BUT you said you will have to relocate and that's something you need to think about. What compromises are you willing to make? And please don't make this decision just like that, think!
Telling from personal experience, getting out of the comfort zone (home/remote work) is not always best. You can stay in that zone and can probably do a lot more as your basic things are well handled.
If they are not launching something means you are consuming the reserves, it's better to leave and join adult place where you will have real work to do for 28lpa
Yep, i agree I'm consuming reserves. But there's actually plenty to do here and potential to learn new things as well, which is why I prefer not to leave A
And B is not my ideal company either. Which is why I prefer using the chance of the offer to get a raise at A instead of joining B
Don’t mention about B , just talk to them .
If they do not pay heed to it, then get an offer letter from B or any other XYZ and tell them that I have got a better offer and I need to move on. If you are performing well, they will definitely match the offer
