Kargil Vijay Diwas. 25 years, man.

Sitting here, staring at my laptop, trying to give a shit about this quarter's numbers. But my mind's somewhere else today.

You know that guy in HR who's always on your case? Or that teammate who stole your idea in the last meeting? Feels like the end of the world sometimes, right?

Then I think about those soldiers in Kargil and every other frontier. Guys our age, probably dreaming about normal stuff - girlfriends, bikes, maybe a cool job. Instead, they're dodging bullets, watching their buddies fall, all for what? So we can sit here and argue over who gets the window seat in the office.

Makes our "problems" look like a joke, doesn't it?

Remember that time you lost sleep over your annual review? Those soldiers lost sleep wondering if they'd see another sunrise.

We stress about meeting targets. They had actual targets on their backs.

Not saying our issues aren't real. They are. But maybe, just maybe, we could cut each other some slack sometimes? That colleague who messed up your presentation - maybe they're dealing with shit we know nothing about.

To those brave souls who never made it back - I don't have the right words. "Thank you" feels hollow, but it's all I've got. Your sacrifice is the reason I can sit here, complain about my boss, and plan my next vacation.

To the families left behind - I can't even begin to imagine your pain. Hope you know that your loved ones' courage hasn't been forgotten.

And to those still bearing the scars, visible and invisible - you deserve way more than just one day of remembrance.

So yeah, next time I'm about to lose it over some office drama or a messed up Excel sheet, I'll try to remember this feeling. Try to be a bit kinder, a bit more patient.

Because at the end of the day, we're the lucky ones. We get to be here, doing our 9-to-5, planning our weekends. All thanks to those who put everything on the line.

We all know what has happened. How unsafe it is for a woman to literally do her job, earn an honest living, etc.

For the past few days or months rather, I have been thinking of moving out of the country just to experience freedom.
Of course, the thought of it also reeks of privilege and the fact that I'm able to choose whether or not I should stay in the country is also reflective of that. 
I'm aware of the fact that things wouldn't be as rosy abroad as people paint it to be, you have to leave a lot of comforts etc. 

Today is independence day. And I'm so conflicted. I'm generally a very patriotic person.
I have always loved my country. It's hard to like it these days.

For me, it was just believing there’s enough growth here in the coming few decades + friends/family

To people who choose to stay in India, what made you stay? 🪷

For me it was the army and followed by my corporate job. I never felt like leaving the country. It’s always better to live like a first class citizen in a 3rd world country than a third class citizen in a first world country. 
  
 In addition to this, family is what defines us as Indians and that kept me hinged back home

I am in shock that the Canadian PM, in the Canadian Parliament no less has alleged that India has eliminated a khalistani on Canadian soil. 
I still remember the days, when the single greatest attack on the soul of the country took place in Mumbai on 26/11, all we could do was establish backchannel diplomacy with the likes of the US to get Pakistan to 'calm down'. Not a single bullet was fired in return in a nation that perceived our weak national security as par for the course, getting the Congress led UPA that presided over this moment of unparalleled humiliation, a thumping verdict in 2009. That was an India where we would lament the lack of credible retaliation options including Covert Ops. It was often stated that IK Gujral rolled back R&AW operations outside the country as an excuse for our lack. Although, no action was taken to initiate the operations again. NONE. But excuses were ready should failures occur again.

That India of my childhood, seems like a distant past. When URI and Balakot happened, we crossed the LoC and launched Spl Ops to impose rising costs upon Pakistani aggression. Khalistani or old thoroughbred battle hardened Islamic Jihad commanders in Pakistan or PoK are being neutralized, further raising costs to threatening Indian interests. 

This is not the India I grew up in. 2004-14, when we ought to have taken off, came a pauper after the initial global liquidity fuelled growth from 04-07. Congress went on a far left loony socialistic binge, with massive amounts of debt given to Crony Industrialist friends leading to an NPA crisis which led to Private investment paralysis, plummeting growth further, and inflation hitting the skies. 

But now, we are poised for a decade or two of rapid, high quality, solid economic growth. All of these factors combine to bolster our Gross National Power like never before. 

We were supposed to be poor, timid and helpless. We pursued sympathy over strength. But I guess, this is no longer the India we knew of.

This is NOT the India I grew up in

This is not the India I grew up, where there was some trust left between religious communities and people were mostly tolerant of each other. Indian cricket team had a Muslim captain, and now an Indian Muslim fastbowler is facing Internet trolls.  
  
 This is not the India I grew up in where hate mongering was not mainstream and was frowned upon.  
  
  
 This is not the India I grew up in. Democratic institutions were fairly independent and there was no Supreme leader worship among the masses.

As a 24-year-old, lately it feels like everyone wants to move abroad.  I've noticed a growing trend among my peers and even older generations: the desire to leave India for better opportunities abroad.

Most of my cousins have moved to the United States while many of my friends are going to Germany/France/Netherlands. 

I am still unsure. I have faced SH in this country in public places and so have many other women I know.  My parents have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and if I decide to go, they will fund my education.

Hence asking this. Is it worth the high taxes we are paying in this country to stay or go abroad make some money and live life for ourself?

What is making you stay in this country?

I'm already making 32L base in India. That's why the opportunity cost seems high.

After living in Bangalore for several years, I reached a breaking point in 2020. I was stuck in traffic on MG Road, surrounded by honking cars and the smell of pollution. Later that evening, I went to a café on Brigade Road, hoping to unwind, but the harassment I faced while walking back was the final straw. Some idiot bike rider groped my butt and fled away in the dark. I was left shocked and grief stricken. You can't imagine how many showers I took that night and cried myself to sleep.

A college friend in Toronto sent me a picture from a local festival, showing people dancing freely in the streets, celebrating without a care. It hit me hard, I craved that sense of belonging and peace.

I applied for a master’s program abroad thereafter. By 2021, I was on a plane to Canada. The first time I wandered through the snowy streets of Toronto, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I knew I’d made the right choice, and since then, I've embraced every moment.
