This is part a manager's job description... To promote their good performers for the company's benefit.... Just because some suck at it doesn't mean the good ones should not do their job

That's not what I meant, I mean to say of those managers who somehow have better connection with upper management and use this to give more opportunities to their team as compared to rest of the regular managers.

Software Engineer

This is everything in private orgs. The earlier you realise the power and authority your manager holds within the dept and with the leaders, it gets better.

Feels frustrating seeing my peers rise above on the sole basis of they got lucky with who their manager is 🥺

Don’t be frustrated. Having a manager with better contacts will only act as a catalyst. At the end it will always be your performance and skills that will take you ahead. Remember this is a long run , we are not sprinting in our corporate career.

Project Manager

I’ve experienced this firsthand. My manager with whom I had a really good professional relationship quit last November and now with the new manager, I got snubbed on my promotion.   Not to boast but I am the top performer in my company.

Yeah…. I’m quitting in 2months to go work with my previous manager

Marketing Manager

Unfortunately a reality, yes. Not much we can do as that’s how the company beureaucracy works

Not a trend. Most managers at one point become so insecure and uptight that they hardly bother about their teams. Just look out for themselves.

Growth Manager

A manager plays a key role in a firm, they are essential to the overall growth of the team (not just for one individual). Your growth/carrer is heavy dependent on your manager. But not all managers have all these qualities (leadership, networking, persuasion skills, crisp communication, strategic thinking etc..). Good managers will have a impact on their entire team, they always get good projects, they create new projects/products, have more promotions from their team, grows in headcount as well. 


Regarding promotions:
Your manager have to fight on behalf of  you for promotion. Usually the will be a committee for promotion vetting and there will be representives from various sub-depts. If your manager convinces others, your promotion will be easy. But it doesn't happen for everyone. This is a sad truth but it is what it is. 

However, there are ways to grow/get promoted even with a mediocre manager and below is the way.. 

Personal networking with other tech leads, EMs, Director's is key for your growth (talking about IT orgs). If you have option, request your manager for cross team projects that has wider visibility. Otherwise, Hackathons/Ideation sessions/Show n Tell sessions/Tech talks are a great way to showcase your potential. Trust me senior leadership pays a lot of attention to these folks who go beyond what is your day job mandates.

Another example is when these managers give better projects to their teams and leave the bad ( less growth prospect) projects for rest of the teams to pick up

Some managers have better reach in the company and this let's their team be at the top of everything.

I have seen people get promoted and praised just because of their managers reach to upper management and rest are left for scrambles many a time not because they don't work hard enough but because their manager doesn't cares about their job that much or maybe doesn't has that level of reach in the company 

These well fit in managers tend to benefit their entire team with more opportunities, better salary packages and benefits than rest.
