Not sure what Product management I am doing

4yoe Engineer turned Product Manager. It's been 8 months I joined this B2B SaaS startup as an APM. Engineering team... mostly interns. Most of my time goes into execution following up with devs. Is the PR reviewed, is the bug fix deployed. No Jira, scrum, sprint planning whatsoever.

CEO runs the whole show. Only fear driven product management. I have no idea what it means to work on vision or strategy. My career has started off with a shitty foundation. Everyday I feel like quitting. What should I do? Quit right away or wait n switch to a better company?

Great that you are getting the first hand experience of what real world looks like.

Not sure what you mean by not getting to ‘work on vision or strategy’. Good PMs are great at execution above all.

And it’s perfectly natural to have CEOs run the show — that’s most of the companies in the industry.

You can quit if you feel like it, things won’t be that different elsewhere.

The kind of execution I do feels like something an engineer manager can do as well. Freeing up time for me to focus on PM work like competitive analysis, prds etc.

Why quit without offer in hand in this market? If u don’t mind staying without job for few months or it’s taking unbearable mental toll then sure quit

Yes you are right. I should be getting another offer. Do know any companies that are better than my current startup?

Considering the above situation because I am also in the same boat, can you all suggest some probable roles to shift from Product Mangememt ?

Not aware of full context. But it's perfectly fine to not have jira, sprint, scrum etc especially in early stage products. That's not a bad thing.

Experience will be more or less similar in other companies as well, but yes if it is too toxic and stressful you should quit.

But the nature of work in PM is mostly the above you mentioned, the vision strategy might come in later stage of experience
