Unfortunately, throughout our history - Mughals liked demolishing Hindu temples in their past time. 
 The fact that there are more temples as you go down south is because Northern rulers literally acted as a shield while defending a considerably fragmented Hindu culture across the country.  
 They were pretty successful at doing this but some collateral damage was unavoidable.
