People rarely develop such desires or addiction from their hard earned money.
All addiction and desire starts with access to some elses money.
I am not sure when you say, you can’t afford iphone with 50lpa CTC. Desire and needs are different.

Why do people want to have any expensive phone when you anyway are going to use it for normal things that can be accomplished with a 10-20K phone?

It's nothing to do with India. This is human mentality. We always strive hard to get what we don't have.
The west calls it "fake it , till you make it".
My networth is more than 1cr+ yet i only use a 20k phone. Real wealth is not using an iPhone
