Thought experiment: Social media
What if there were a social media platform that had only paid users and part of the payment would go to creators based on performance metrics? Would the quality of the platform be different? What about scale? Can it be built profitably? Wondering about the threads vs Twitter debate and what can be a differentiator in this space.
People have executed it already.
Many YouTube alternative came into picture. I am aware of 2 which were on the model you described.
If I am not wrong one was 'Nebula' supported by Thomas Frank, matt d evela, etc
And another one was supported was supported by Pewdiepie.
Netiher of the two gave any competition to youtube. And ultimately run on small scale. Most likely low profits.

Thanks, did not know this. Any social network has network effect at the centre of adoption and retention. So I have been a bit skeptical of it too - wondering if there are alternate models to still get the core engagement going.
