I remember 2-3 years ago we started to integrate Uniware for our warehouse and order management use cases and we were pissed with the product and the allotted account manager was nonetheless the funniest employee unicommerce could have.

For every requirement he either denied us or asked that we have to bear the development costs.

To the current day, Opened groww app and randomly saw Unicommerce under IPO section. Was happy and shocked at the same time. Arrange meeting with higher authorities at Unicommerce to congratulate them on this.

Tell how was your experience with Unicommerce.

I have been following the Indian startup scene for a while now, and I have to say that I am not impressed. It seems like most of the startups here are nothing more than people chasing quick bucks and the entire scene is a circlejerk of people doing everything, attending these stupid conferences and gatherings than actually building something game-changing.

Every founder is chasing nothing more than a valuation just so they can exit and there’s nothing wrong with it but don’t sit on a moral high ground talking about building business etc. There’s a reason we don’t see startups here penetrating west because most of the founders in the Indian ecosystem reek of ego and it’s all because we don’t judge business on merit but based on the degree the founders have. We all can count stupid startups draining money all because they are from some IIT or IIM or now some fancy degree from Ivy and yes it takes effort and hard work to reach there. Still, it automatically doesn’t translate to you naturally being better than a guy working his ass off to make up that difference.

Also, just because you used your dad’s money to start a 'Venture Firm or be an angel investor after college doesn’t mean you’re an expert at everything. You’re just adding to the noise and the hype that is already too much in this space. You’re not helping anyone but yourself and your ego.

So a friendly reminder can we all actually focus on building things based on hard work and merit instead of glorifying this circlejerk. Can we stop being obsessed with funding rounds and valuations and start being obsessed with solving real problems and creating value for customers and society? Can we stop being influenced by the media and the hype and start being influenced by the data and the feedback? Can we stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution?

Fast learning and fast paced growth aside, after 15 years of MNC experience  I joined a startup to get some ESOPs.. and hopefully a good buyback ..

I have worked in 2 startups now.Both of these were already  Unicorns when I joined .


While I love the culture and dynamic pace of a startup 
i feel my chances of getting a payout  are slim...

My personal learning is to get a good reward you have to be in top 10 employees for sure ... otherwise it's not worth it ..

There is no point joining a Unicorn in middle management...or second in command in any function...

Few months ago, mama earth CEO compared it's losses with Amazon saying, "Amazon too made losses". Now Firstcry is IPO bound with their losses being 6x in 2023 and also justifoed it. 

Amazon made a loss Because they  invested all their profits into R&D

Most startups are making a loss because they are selling products at a discount to show high GMV

Both are not same... 

I am yet to see a single big success story in India startup ecosystem which justifies 'India has arrived' and so much VC's exuberance .

While I'm proud of these two revolutionising the quick commerce space, I somehow have a bad feeling about this

Profits aren't coming, money is flowing
Don't know what the VCs are seeking?
Why bake a a pie that you can't eat later?

Too much money too soon, where have we seen that?

I'm talking about real profits, startups that generate good revenue and do not depend on VC money.

How much did your ESOP value appreciate during such events, if any? How long ago before the event had you joined the company?

PS: I've heard ESOP value for some IPO borne companies appreciate by 2x after the IPO.
