Is BookMyShow tech team really this incompetent? The whole website/app crashed multiple times today - are they really running a monolith for a ticketing app in today's day and age?

Any newbie will have a better architecture design for their app, how does such a big company mess this up so badly? Any insiders/tech expert povs here?

We seldom get asked this question about how do we ensure a highly efficient and robust platform/system that can cater to large number of hits.

Well, Bookmyshow's server was down for the starting 4 mins with a 504. How could they have improved the services to make sure this didnt happen ?

Is it pre allocating high performance cloud resources started up and then switched to at 12PM or having multiple regions to divert and split the huge incoming traffic ?

What are your thoughts ?

I know this is also a more of a System Design scenario, would love to hear people's advice on this.

PS. Unfortunately I didnt get a ticket despite having a 10K queue number. Since by the time I got option to select the blocks, and 2 seats - there were only few blocks left and the seats present in the block were at opposite ends - so had to go back select a different block and there also it so happened to be the case.

The ticket resale market is notorious for driving prices up, and seeing that chaos only adds to my concern. As someone who understands tech, I wish the platform could have better handled the surge in traffic. It’s a reminder that we need more robust systems to ensure that genuine fans get a fair shot at experiencing this incredible concert. Here’s hoping they can sort things out soon!

Bookmyshow took a terrible decision to introduce queues. And those queues are working like a priority queue. My waiting time increases then decreases then does random stuff.

Frankly it is quite shitty, the entire UX. It is down quite frequently (at least for me), the homepage itself doesn't load just shows a black screen with the ghost loading for titles, a lot of the times the posters for movies are interchanged etc etc. 
I feel like if viacom18 engineers do some engineering rather than giving each other medals on twitter and shitting all over twitter spaces, the platform might become better.

Crickpe failed to scale on day 1.
They didn't expect this exponential traffic.
Crickpe is build by code brew lab, chandigarh a service based company, their developer might not created such large scale app.

Crickpe failed to scale on day 1

Zerodha really really needs to fire their head of engineering. Such frequent shutdowns, server errors and glitches in an industry where software error makes a difference between profit and loss of lakhs & crores is hilarious.

I remember watching their 13th Anniversary episode on YouTube where they talked about all the worldly purposeful things in life and their tech falls flat when required. Zerodha is almost always trending for wrong reasons during high intensity trading sessions like elections and such.

Nithin claims that he talks about things openly but has never been asked a question about their tech issues in any of his public interviews, something to ponder upon.

At this point they are just drinking their own cool-aid.

- BookMyShow may cancel tickets for Coldplay's tour bought from reselling platforms.
- The company filed an FIR with Mumbai Police against Viagogo, Stubhub Holdings, and individuals reselling tickets.
- Despite rumors, BookMyShow confirmed the concert will proceed as planned.
- Tickets were sold out within minutes, later resold for up to INR 4 Lakh.
- BookMyShow's rival, Zomato, faced a similar issue with Diljit Dosanjh’s concert tickets.

So last week, I got coffee from Starbucks early morning and was sipping it while travelling to the client office.

As soon as I got to the reception, I was asked to go into a conference room where the CEO and the tech lead was there with the entire tech team. CEO straight up says, "We have a problem, a BIG one". Someone from our team had introduced a bug into the codebase for an internal API that had no fallbacks, their main service was down because of us. They had pushed a hot-fix which reverted to an older version based on a heuristic but it lacked a lot of the ML intelligence we had built for them. 

My PPT suddenly seemed worthless. I was almost on the verge of breakdown because I was pulling very long hours. Bhai! I didn't meet my girlfriend on one of the dates and she was super mad at me.

I coordinated with our developers, reviewed code personally after 6 years of no coding, and called colleagues at Deloitte for support. We re-deployed project on K8s and? It worked obv. CEO shakes my hand and I head back home.

Leaving the office, I felt that what am I even doing with my life. I feel that I should get back to coding now. So, I have decided to devote weekends to brush up my tech skills. Girlfriend is supportive toh dekhte hain kya hota hai.
