Conducted one AMA session last week & was overwhelmed by both number & positive feedback. I might choose to skip any question repeated from last time.

Software architect

1. You are building a software that otherwise could be built by a 12 year old kid, if given proper training.
2. You cannot code if I cut off google, stackoverflow & related websites.
3. You are just concerned about producing the output quickly because a. your work is time bound, b. you want to stand out from others.
4. You attend countless meetings that carry no value, thanks to Agile.
5. 10 people write code for the same software which otherwise could have been written by 1 person.
6. You write pages of documents just because you are expected to write for the team, compliance & stuff.
7. You don’t care about non-functional requirements as nobody asked for it.
8. You are spending hours together in coding a simple thing & you are branded a hard-worker.
9. Or you don’t spend much time in coding because you impress people with tech jargons that you learnt recently. You are branded a smart-worker.
10. The code you write will be completely rewritten in next 3-4 years just to catch up with the industry trends.
11. Your only goal is to earn loads of money which otherwise could not be earned in other engineering fields. That’s one of the reasons why you are on grapevine.

I am missing a lot of fields here, but I believe there are lot of communities out there of software engineers, design folks, MBAs, not much of the hands on engineers in India

I've been in denial for some time on this issue and also internally optimistic that atleast the best of the best programmers will survive. But I now think my beliefs were foolish.

The hourglass maintainers did not survive the onset of clock technology. Similarly, programming will not survive the onset of powerful LLMs that are many times better than what we have today.

The end of programming?

I am an engineer, what I enjoy is solving technically challenging problems. I don't really want to spend my time bothering with non-code solutions to your business problem, and I don't care how much money my code makes you. Just have a tech lead give me a challenging tech problem to solve or build for(WITH the necessary requirements) and I'll get it done. Simple. 


Personally I'm saddened to see how chasing impact has taken over all good tech companies, and how you basically HAVE to create value and take ownership in other ways if you want to be SDE-3 or higher. I would rather be a more technically competent, deliverer SDE (think someone who's extremely good at being an SDE-1). Climbing the SDE ladder is boring.

Any other engineers find it boring and frustrating to chase impact?

That's not what am saying or pre assuming.

But the brain behind those supercomputers h100 and all, who is making LLMs train faster.

GPT 5.0 can do miracles and imagine 8.0 coupled with those 1nm GPUs.

I still believe that not 100% can be replaced but yes 60-70% roles will be redundant.

Top 10% will survive and thrive if ride the ai wave.
