e.g in my case:

1. I go for a walk almost everyday around 12:30ish AM (in HSR). Helps me process how my day went. 

2. Whenever I used to book a rapido bike/scooty, i used to drive it myself with the rapido driver as pillion. (just asked them nicely, 90% of them didn't refuse). Now I have my own bike though.

3. Most of the time when I have traveled in a train, i travel in the general box of trains. Only to connect/listen to stories of that section of our society, even though i could afford tickets for other classes.

Curious on what made you take that decision! What the world convinced you about the decision? Did your friends and family treated you differently when you didn't walk the conventional path?

Anyone here done something that isn't normal path?

A lot of noise around AI taking coding jobs, which i fear might be real. Like not completely but you get my point. So how should one upskill themselves (especially the average folks, top 1/2% will not be affected in any field imo) for the upcoming shift? Like will data analytics/science or maybe ai/ml engineering jobs be on rise ? Should be start upskilling in those fields or any other suggestions? I would really like to know it from someone who has good experience in the industry or someone with good insight. Thanks

Not trying to seek validation of my trait. But I feel like I have a unique trait where I take inspiration from ordinary, below average and mediocre people. Here’s what keeps me charged.

1. If this person can do it, why can’t I?
2. If an ordinary person with hardly any knowledge can boast his skillsets on LinkedIn, why can’t I go ahead and build something useful for this society, not on LinkedIn?
3. If ordinary people can become popular on Instagram by uploading cringe content, why can’t I make something inspirational for people around the world?
4. If ordinary people can earn way higher salary than me, why can’t I find alternate source of income by unleashing my expertise?
5. If every Tom, Dick & Harry can claim to be a coach by spamming with countless ads, why can’t I create something useful and free to use content that can instill genuine knowledge?

I’m getting way lower than I deserve in terms of remuneration and it is natural to compare and feel bad, but that doesn’t demotivate me to create something good. Just penning down my heart out.

We’ve all read the software engineer turned PM story. And although very commendable, and kudos to them for doing what needs to be done, I’d love to hear people who’ve gone down the not so traditional career path or have had weird career trajectories. Are you happy about the decisions you’ve made? Are you content? Is there something you would do differently?

What do you do other than work ?

I can't seem to relate to much of the non-FAANG junta out there. I mean I have a cushy job with probably 0.1% pay of all SWEs(pretty much like all of us do). But these cookie-cutter roles have been taking a mental toll on me. Like I am getting paid but I feel a little purpose-less. What am I gunning for in this life? 

All my life I wanted to go to a good college to get into a good company. In college I wanted to get a good codeforces rank so that I could get into FAANG. Now that I am in FAANG I have nothing to look forward to. 

Any of you all feeling this way? Because I don't see myself offer-shopping and feeling much happy about that either.

Feeling depressed at Amazon(2YOE/41L CTC). Anyone else feeling the same way?

Recently watched Soul on hotstar and this actually makes sense now. The character was trying hard to perform in front of a crowd and  when it happened he wasn't feeling any change at all. At that time, he was told about the fish and the ocean story :-  
  
 I heard this story about a fish. 
  
 He swims up to an older fish and says, “I’m trying to find this thing they call ‘the ocean.'” 
  
 “The ocean? the older fish says, “That’s what you’re in right now.” 
  
 “This?” says the young fish. “This is water. What I want is the ocean!”

Since early childhood all I talked, watched and read was Technology. When I got home from school, I worked on C++ and built games by modelling physics, collisions etc. I frequented a ton of online forums for WebGL and other archaic tech that most of you don't even know about.

I knew all about the Silicon Valley, the stories and legends. I learned all about the history of technology and used to work deeply with my father with transistors, ECU/ECMs etc during weekends. 

I thought I knew it all. I thought I was the deal. I remember schooling folks about all of this, making them realise they are dumb as hell. I remember when I stepped into my MS in CS program and attended a club meeting, I realized that I was just like everybody else.

They were all the same as me in hindsight. They knew the same things and lived and breathed the same passion. I knew I wasn't special. For the first time, I suffered ego-death. I thought I was special, and I was not.

This is just a reminder, that you are not special. You are less unique than you think you are. So lose that attitude.

In a nutshell, we're just mental labourers and we're paid more than physical labourers not because  we're smarter, it is done in order to compensate for the compromised health (lowers your testosterone, fucks reward system of your brain, causes deficiency, anxiety, myopia, backpain).

As a human, what are you proud of in your life today? Be it anything that you did for yourself, your family, or for anyone else for that matter.

Looking for answers from the more experienced ones more, as how the parameter of pride/joy changes as you face and experience life more :)

I personally admire people who don't need to be on or use social media to run their businesses. But it's become difficult to avoid not sharing something ever so often to stay relevant. 

People have goldfish memory spans and seem to forget things easily these days. They need reminders that xyz brand/person still exists.

Plus I'm a private person and don't really like talking about myself much. And meaningful share-worthy work milestones only happen once in a while.

Any good examples of people who have grown personal brands without posting occasional selfies on LinkedIn? How about outside LinkedIn?

The only one that comes to my mind is Michael Burry, but I'm not nearly as good a trader as him.

What is something that you found/read on Grapevine that stuck with you?

What's the one thing you had wanted to change / start / stop doing this year - call it resolution at the beginning of the year? How are you doing on that? 

I wanted to get into a better rhythm on fitness and sustain the good eating habits from last year. 

Where am I? 

After a wasted JFM quarter, did somewhat okay in Apr, May and June. July has been not too bad. Baby steps: trying to get 3-4 hours in a week for fitness. I have realised habit formation is a function of stacking. When I workout on Saturday, I want to go to the gym on Sunday too and then on Monday and Tuesday and so on.. When I miss 2 days in a row, then I degrade to saying okay, let's start on Sunday - as a fresh week. Trying to break out of that and convincing myself today is as good as Sunday. :P Definitely improved, but a long way to go.

Would love to know about others here on and hope to get more inspiration. 

As they say, one day at a time. So do you want to wait till Jan'24? :)
